Well, Steam seemed like the awesome of the awesome. I downloaded Doom2 and have had some good retro fun with it. Unfortunately, I downloaded Skyrim, it played just fine the first time, next time I tried to play it I got an error message re: a missing executable. I went through the first coupla steps they suggested to no avail, then lost patience and went back to Doom and DDO. Sad

I've never seen that happen before, all I can suggest is to right click on the game in the steam game browser, pull up properties, verify game integrity.

If that doesn't work then just reinstall skyrim

Me neither. A game not working is not so unusual, but working once then failing is kinda weird.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, since it did work once. How do you do that - Remove Files under properties?

Also, do you (or anyone) have a recommendation on a free anti-virus that works well with Steam? I'm thinking of using Avast. Used to use AVG but it became a real resource hog.

I don't play much so I'm not exactly sure what's usual and what the terminology is. I have DDO set up so that I press W to move forward and I use the mouse to steer. S is back, A&D are strafe left/right. I can't get used to (or rather won't take the time to get used to) turning with A/D or the arrow keys. Does that make sense?

FWIW some years ago I played Oblivion and enjoyed it, although it was too easy to beat with certain play styles.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions, I'm working a ton of hours now but in two weeks will have 6 days off and I'd kinda like to spend half of that vegging to a new game.

Yeah, WASD refers to the standard keys people push for forward/left/back/right respectively. This is the typical setup for most first-person games.

I've been playing a lot of Borderlands 2 lately, which uses that setup. It's a combination first-person shooter and PRG set in the future on a planet outside the reaches of normal governing. It features a lot of violence and dark humor, if that's the sort of thing you'd like or dislike.

You can buy it on Steam. I'm not sure how much it normally costs these days.

Doom 2? Nice. I haven't done that through Steam, but I've used a handful of different emulators meant to run Doom, Heretic, and Hexen. They make modding super easy, and for a while, I was working on making a zombie mod.

I've never really spent much time on PC games that weren't mmos, and even in that field I have yet to find an mmo that even came close to classic Everquest years, which are long gone now. I have tried loto, eq2 and wow and they are kinda decent I suppose. I've heard great things about FFXIV too, but I'm currently waiting for something brandnew and utterly different than the old school mmo formula.

RPG, Dragon Age is the way to go.

Also, Civ 5 is addicting to no end.
