Can believing in bullshit be a good thing?

I became less judgmental and less of an asshole after I started to pray, meditate, and study sacred texts and writings of various Catholic, Buddhist, and Hindu Saints.. I used to be anti-homosexual and it was actually after becoming a Christian that I gained understanding of others and compassion, and have made plenty of gay friends since. Religion can make some people more bigoted but in my case it did the opposite.

In the Bible I found "do not judge lest you be judged. "Do not try to remove the speck from your neighbors eye if you have timber in your own eye... Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone...I came not to call the righteous but to call sinners".

I didn't see Jesus condemn any homosexuals or speak about it.

Jesus was criticized by the Religious people because he was a friend of Prostitutes, thieves, adulterers, drunkards, and tax collectors. It was unlawful for a Jew to do such things.

You're a more open minded christian than many. My grandmother would never have me study other religions or beliefs like that. It's good that you became more open minded, but what about christianity made you that way? What did you get out of christianity that you didn't get elsewhere?

Things like being nice to people can be found practically everywhere.

But that's got nothing to do with the Weinberg quote. He wasn't saying that only religious people commit evil acts, he was saying that otherwise good people will commit evil acts for religious reasons.

He also said that even thinking about adultery is a sin for which you might burn in hell.
Don't forget the whole doctrine of second coming, judgement day and lake of fire.

I don't entirely disagree, but I find most Religious assholes who do wicked things in the name of God, were self-righteous assholes to begin with, and are using Religion to continue condemning others and stirring up the poop pot;
and looking righteous in their own eyes and those of their fellow self-righteous Religious butt buddies.

Well I hate to answer your question because I believe it was grace that made me that way...shit I sound like a fool when I say that. Tongue

So evil people were evil to begin with. Good people were good to begin with. What use is religion for then?

I was a wicked person and I wish you could see where I was without Religion and where I am now as a result. But I can't do that so you can choose to take my word for it or consider me full of shit. Whatevs!

So sometimes bullshit can turn shitty person into less shitty person. Sometimes.
Ok. That's true for a lot of other things. Getting hit in the head with a golf club might turn some assholes into good people.
