Coming next summer... Strawman 2: Electric Boogaloo.

I'm sure old Rev 777 will love it (and be completely unable to say why) but honestly, you'd think that at least a few of these people will twig that there's something fundamentally fucked up at having to defend a viewpoint using only lies, right?

The best religious movies are zombie movies. A new religious series, Rosemary's Baby, starts in June. It might show a nasty demon. http://www.nbc.com/rosemarys-baby?__sour...27s%20baby

After all, what's more religious than zombies and demons?

Gravity may be inaccurate, but it's also entertainment, and there's a certain expectation of fantasy when it comes to entertainment. These christian movies? They're also vehicles for proselytizing, dressed up as simple fun; say what you want about the science in Gravity, at least that wasn't actively, wildly wrong. At no point did Gravity claim, say, that the theory of gravity is connected to some other unrelated theory.

These christian movies exist to cast doubt on evolution, using lies and misinformation to do so, and smearing those of us that lack belief in the process. This isn't just entertainment, it's active promotion of a message that's not only factually wrong, but actively seeks to retard scientific progress and foster distrust of scientists, atheists, and educators. If you think this is just a movie and I'm reading too much into things, I just need to point you to the credits of God's Not Dead, which displays information on a number of real life court cases where us damnable atheists are trying to "take god out of schools" by asking that they obey the law. It's not just fantasy, the producers are clearly setting these movies up as reflective of real life, as plausible scenarios despite the strawmen and falsehoods.

That's why it deserves more attention for its inaccuracies.

No, it doesn't. That gives these cretins exactly what they want, which is attention. I don't care about shitty movies with part-time Walmart employee actors. If the general public ignores a movie like this, the only people who will watch it are already convinced of its message, which would render it a complete failure.

However, in its own special way, the movie does highlight the actual problem we face: the specter of captive audiences in classrooms being force-fed religious bullshit instead of being taught about reality, and even this short trailer expresses this without meaning to: you have an inquisitive, curious college student's desire to obtain a meaningful education quashed by her religious, dogmatic idiot of a father.

Although, to be perfectly honest, I really do not think this is a problem on more than a regional level. The very existence of a movie like this is indicative of serious desperation.

On the other hand- and perhaps this is just the idealism in me talking- what we've got here is a prime piece of evidence with which to punish christians for their dishonesty. We'll never reach the hopelessly convinced, and those guys are gonna comprise this movie's main audience, but there are those we can reach, and in those cases there are three possible outcomes: they'll either A, not see the movie, B, see the movie without the addition of a dissenting voice if we do nothing, or C, be exposed to the movie with the added possibility of being shown how thoroughly dishonest and manipulative it is.

A doesn't matter, but B kinda does, and we have an opportunity to turn some fraction of B into C. We aren't going to change minds by opting out of the conversation and allowing these movie-making conmen to continue expressing their side by puppeteering a strawman version of ours.

I hope that in some (not too far off) future where religion has been relegated to the dustbin of history, we will be able to use videos like this as an example of how our ignorance of human psychology allowed us to continue to peddle outrageous nonsense long after we had moved on from caves.

They are cheap to produce and make money, and in some recent cases they've made pretty good money. Hollywood chases the money; if creationist movies sell tickets, they will make creationist movies.

Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

These types of movies either immediately piss me off or make me laugh hysterically. I was a little more than irritated at this one, now I'm just past the point of giving a shit. Let the Christians disseminate their fallacious material all they want, it doesn't change facts.

Under most circumstances, I would agree, but not with this, and there's a very important reason why: most Christians aren't even going to care about it. If ignored, it will basically be seen only by Talibangelicals and their families. If a major stink is raised about it, you can count on the Fox News crowd to turn it into a "War on Christmas" sort of farce, bringing this stupid thing to the attention of millions of Republichristians, many of whom will be reinforced in their stupidity.

As I said, this is a movie which can only succeed if people like us help it to by giving the exposure it can't get naturally.

I was both surprised and super happy to see that Australia got in, there. Hetalia is awesome. Tongue
