I wasn't scared of either terminator, it wasn't really much more deadly than a human. Really they could have sent a milkman back in time and got him to kill John Conner and his mother with poisoned milk or something. Instead of a massive human robot running in like a bull into a china shop.
I liked the terminator films though just because I wanted to be the terminator.

A milkman can't single handedly shoot up a police station full of armed cops to get to its target, nor can he get run over by a 18 wheeled gasoline truck first before hijacking the truck to attempt to run down his prey, nor can he survive the holocaust when his gasoline truck is blow up, to rise from the flames to go machine to men with the main protector if it's prey.
Come now, a machine as wooden as schwartzneggar, as seemingly oblivious as schwartzneggar, as steroidally addled as schwartzneggar, and yet is animated by a singleminded purposefulness and machine-like calculation, and will never stop for any reason in its quest to kill you, is an effective, and while not cerebral in concept is cerebral in conception, science fiction horror.
A poisonous milkman will simple not do.

I don't think many people would hide in a police station from an overweight tubby milkman with a jolly smile on his face. But a guy who looks like he's on steroids holding a mini gun is a different matter.

My parents started me on adult films pretty early I was watching Silence of the Lambs and American Werewolf in London by 8-9 years old. I don't think they were meant to be scary just tense, a constant unstoppable machine you can't reason with it or beg it to stop. You just have to keep running. I think it did that pretty well. I didn't watch the first until fairly recently but I remember enjoying that one too. I even liked the more recent ones to be honest. I tend to be a bit more forgiving than most when it comes to films though.

I just think the original was good enough at building tension and suspense that the Terminator genuinely scared me a little. Hence the horror vibe in an action movie.
I know people like chuck don't think too much about closure, and companies that would milk a cash cow if they could will try to leave a few loose ends hanging, but I appreciate closure in a movie or book or game. One of my favorite book series actually kind of started a new conflict in the last book because of the idea that "stories never end", which I don't really agree with.
Whatever floats your boat, though.

I also only recently watched the first three, not even a year ago!
I'm an instant fan of almost any Schwarzenegger film. My adoration of him is the closest thing I'll ever get to "worship" lol.
I still need to see the new one(s?), though

I did the Terminator ride at Universal Studios when I was little. It was legit!

Cracked.com ran a competition a while back, on the theme of "classic movie scenes totally altered by one tiny change" or somesuch. My favourite was the police station scene in T1, with Schwarzenegger saying "I'll come back."
