Cat saves toddler from Dog

RE: Cat saves toddler from Dog
Oh god that's so awful! Well, I mean the cat saving him is great, but his poor little leg Sad

I can't help but think what would have happened if this was my neighbor's kid. I mean a cat can only hold that big dog off for so long. I'm glad this baby's mom was watching him.

I think with cats it's shock value. Larger animals are surprised that something that size would attack them so ferociously and just run.

Of course, anyone who has had to deal with a truly angry cat can sympathise.

I had a cat that would routinely chase off big dogs - like Labrador- and retriever- sized dogs. He would see them from our driveway and cross the cul-du-sac to chase them off.

Then again, this was also a cat that would lay in the middle of the cul-du-sac and wouldn't move when garbage trucks would come through; they'd have to do 20-point turns to drive around him.

He was fearless, this cat. A dog was no big thing to him.

Heart I miss my Linder-mahn.

Those were some really nice garbage men. I once saw some puppies in the road that wouldn't move, and got out to move them myself. Not sure why the garbage man wouldn't step out to shoo the cat away, instead of doing a 20 point turn.

Dogs have to be trained to help people - or to do work/jobs which is what normally happens, it's not in their nature to just do it. And in fact when dogs are attacked whilst working they often never work again. This often happens to guide dogs.

Pardon me but that's bullshit. There are thousands of people who've said "I don't know how my dog could have done that". Hell where I used to work there was a dog named Argos (at a different/neighbour's business) - lovely dog, not a German Shepherd but a similar breed. His owners treated him right, he used to come play with other people, etc. He was never mistreated.

After he bit three different people he was put down.

FYI if you go to pat a cat that's particularly unfriendly/wild it will scratch you, but it won't bite you.

If you can even get close enough to the cat to pet it before it runs away... most cats "flight" instincts are stronger than their "fight" instincts and they only fight when cornered and can't escape.

I have been bitten by two cats. They were both assholes.

RE: Cat saves toddler from Dog
Furthermore the bullshit idea that dogs cannot be savage unless mistreated and/or provoked is partly what biased the original investigation of Azaria Chamberlain's death (she was dragged off and killed by a dingo - that's a wild dog that's never been mistreated by humans). What does a farmer do if his herding dog or his pet dog attacks one of his sheep (or livestock)? He puts it down. Heck we hunt and kill the killer sharks too.

Cats were domesticated in a very different way to dogs - whereas the domestic dog is quite different to the Wolf, and we domesticated the now-extinct Aurochs to create Cattle, the domestic cat is so similar to its undomesticated original species that even the European Wildcat needs to be DNA tested to firmly identify it (the domestic cat was domesticated from the African Wildcat which is itself descended from the European Wildcat). Domestication has barely altered the species, and as we don't use them for food or to perfume work the theory of how they became domesticated is that cats decided to domesticate themselves (ie live close to humans for mutual benefit). Thus it is actually in their nature to be friendly to humans (or at the very least to coexist) – unlike dogs which we have tamed (and some breeds more than others).

Cats become quite attached and protective of children. That actually could be one reason why humans liked having cats around 10,000 years ago. But at the same stroke cats have been known to attack babysitters out of fear for the wellbeing of human children too. Dogs on the other hand are known to maul children:

[Image: 090a5bc6-1a24-47e9-8095-d6d2ba06e2b1_profile.jpg]

That little boy above (Kevin) was nearly mauled to death, witnesses said the pitbull was shaking his head trying to kill him - not trying to "warn him". Just imagine what he would have looked like as a bloody mess before being stitched up at the hospital. $14,400 was raised for his medical fund.

Six months before the dog attacked the boy it attacked and killed a puppy that had "wondered into the yard".

But, people are so batshit crazy that they petitioned not to have the dog destroyed, and thus the dog has lived after a petition to save the dog raised 67,000 signatures.

Doesn't that tell you something - $14,400 raised for the boy and 67,000 signatures raised on a petition for the dog: people would rather keep killer dogs than support children who were mauled by killer dogs.

The following is an example of hunter/gatherers taking advantage of the flight instincts of cats.
