Religious "moderates" and atheists

RE: Religious "moderates" and atheists
I agree with what you're saying Shonuff but I can just imagine the argument that will be thrown back. Christianity, unlike Nazism or the KKK isn't (seemingly) founded on an inherent political or social agenda. Religion is different from the KKK or Nazism in the sense that it doesn't necessarily exist to wipe out black people, or get rid of jews. It's still questionable about much of this religion's motives but the 'religious moderates' can always make that argument. They will always say that their religion is fluffy and nice, and that they want to save everyone. They'll still cling onto calling themselves christians because of the fact they see themselves as True Christians™ and all these other negatives are not part of their religion.

I suspect the main reason why many religious moderates aren't more active in exposing or vilifying the extremists is because they simply don't see it as their problem. How can it be, when these extremists aren't representative of their own beliefs? (which is ofcourse their own logic)

What's wrong with being anti-religion?

Does religion require some sort of special respect?

It's just another idea, like a political or philosophical concept. I don't need to afford it anymore respect than nazism or liberalism (etc).

Bigotry? Fuck you. Lets not forget how religions, particularly Christianity acted when they were powerful. Silencing deviants, burning witches, stoning gays and suppressing scientific advancement. Oh yea and those huge bloody crusades to rid the world of the 'infidels'. The religion of Christianity has just as dark a past as the Nazi party and the KKK.
Now don't misunderstand me, Christians are (on average) nice, normal people. However they follow this blood soaked, overgrown cult of human sacrifice anyway, whether it be through ignorance of the past activities of their religion or they don't appreciate and comprehend the atrocities that have taken place and just gloss over the bad stuff while paying attention to the good stuff.

So it's bigotry just to use the words "KKK" and "Nazism" in a sentence?

I didn't compare those ideologies to Christianity EXCEPT to make the point that they all have a bloody history full of xenophobia and that it would be silly to continue association with the name, even if that's where the association ended. Remember, moderates and extremists claim to value the same creeds, the same books, the same ethereal figures. They often go to the same churches and play on the same volleyball team at church picnics. If I want to start a group, even something that has nothing to do with what I've mentioned, I sure as hell am not going to use the initials "KKK" and then hope people will see the difference. Do moderates really not want to stand out from extremists? Again, I wonder, is the moderate largely a myth?

But now that you've invited the doctrinal comparison of Nazism, KKK, and Christianity, I have to wonder: if you think killing and oppressing people of a different race is horrible, have you met Yahweh? He makes Nazi concentration camps look like child's play and he does it on the basis of how gullible a person is! (He likes extreme gullibility; does not have any use in "eternity" for the skeptic).

RE: Religious "moderates" and atheists
I still don't get what moral theory you're operating under which says that if I identify as a specific religion, I'm somehow responsible for the acts of others who do likewise. Religion is associated with bad acts. I get that. But so is capitalism, communism, liberalism, conservativism, etc. There's no group of people for whom there aren't bad seeds. I fail to see where, because there's a historical connection between my beliefs and those of a fundamentalist, like say enrico / Riketto, that because we both belong to the same umbrella group, I somehow inherit a moral responsibility for his behavior. Are you responsible for the behaviors of every corporation whose product you buy? I get that you are angered by what you feel the religious have done, but under what theory do I get tarred and feathered simply for belonging to the same group? If associating with a group that has contained bad actors is a crime, then you are all guilty as well.

I still don't have any idea who you're responding to, but could you explain why accepting the guilt of original sin is not a problem, but pointing out the ethical problems of a given set of beliefs is unacceptable?
