Meat eating ethical?

Anyone here know of good arguments against the notion that eating animals is unethical? Why exactly is it ok to cage a cow its whole life, slaughter it, and then eat it but it's not ok to cage a human its whole life, slaughter it, and eat it? What exactly is the difference that makes the former ethical but the latter unethical?
If your only argument is "Duhhhh cow tasty!" then please leave. Serious arguments only please.

Arguments -for- livestock production and utilizing aren't difficult to pick up...but perhaps first we might mention that the option you presented is a fairly thin representation of what -could- be done. I personally don't think it's ethical to cage animals needlessly either.

Ok, take out the cage part of the equation. We still have the kill part which is the heart of the dilemma.

I disagree, the killing..and subsequently what we do with their bodies after they're dead is pretty much an afterthought.
Now before you get to thinking I'm being harsh...keep in mind that an "ethically raised" captive animal can expect a healthier life and a kinder end than any wild counterpart. Perhaps we think of the kil;ling as being the dillemma...but isn't it possible that we only think so because we have removed ourselves from wasting away or being eaten alive by some asshat feline? Just food for thought..hehehe.

Cows aren't sentient . . .
enough. So we eat 'em.
I know there might be an inference there it would be OK to eat the profoundly developmentally handicapped, (persons, silly, not cows) but it ain't. From a religious aspect, it would be the soul thing cropping up again, in real life, eating people apparently propagates prion illnesses (among others) and we may have evolved a distaste for it because of that.

We also have exceedingly inefficient metabolisms. Alot -more- people would go hungry if we wasted caloric energy trying to farm our fellow man.

Ethics, morals, right and wrong, are all ideas and opinions that each individual or group of people make up. It's up to each person to decide what's right and what is wrong. The rest of the population will decide if it will be tolerated and or accepted.
So to answer your question.

There is no good argument for the insipid position that it's ethical to eat meat, other than it feeds lots of people. However, that need for meat can be fixed someday with technology, so the question of ethics is not solved. The tasty argument is sadly your best card other than the need for meat to feed people argument, which is short-sighted anyway. The fact of that matter is, it is unethical to mass slaughter sentient animals, plenty of animals are capable of higher thought and social cohesion, including the ones we eat like Pigs. A different way to look at it is, it could be us on the menu someday if more advanced beings came and wanted to force feed, mass breed then eat us. Other countries are already starting to give certain animals some forms of person-hood. And dogs for example can be given someones inheritance which is sort of implied person-hood already.
If the hypothetical idea of an afterlife means more to you than the objectively true reality we all share, then you deserve no respect.

As a Vegan Nutritionist, yes I have plenty of reasons.
But I don't like confrontation and I chimed in on a "vegan" thread here before and people were not to happy with my statements.
But would anyone want to be caged? My dog use to bark, and whine when he was caged for trips or at the vet.
Obviously showing he was unhappy.
Animals can talk, birds can talk, animals can communicate with other animals (at least within their species)
We just don't speak the language they speak. So understanding how they feel is harder for us because there is not a "voice" behind the face that we can perceive.
