I'm an out-and-proud Southern Californian myself.   from the UK! Many people in my country are in the same position you are. The majority of religious people aren't too worried about practicing their religion but still identify themselves as religious for cultural reasons. The result is that religion is not a big issue here (recent rises in vocal fundamentalism, notwithstanding). There'll be plenty of shared experience. Enjoy!
