I like to hold the conceit that I'm enlightened on some matters and I have been doing things to make my little life less of a burden on the planet, but giving up AC in the summer isn't one of the concessions I'm willing to make as long as I'm living in the south.

I lived without central air - just a shitty window unit and several fans - for some years here in NC.

I'm willing to pay for the A/C.

I'm saying what I can do at my home.
And what I see done in most homes in Portugal.

If you can't do that in there, then AC does seem like a must. Just think of your future generations and try to keep it in decent levels. I guess you can be comfortable indoors at a nice temperature of 25ºC (~77F), during the Summer and 18ºC (~65F) in the Winter, right?

G'day bud...
Evaporative doesn't have filters
The cooler on the roof has but mainly to wet it for the cooling process.
Aircons have filters, all types
Central heaters have a filter on the main inlet, good to clean twice a year, no filters on the outlets.
Not in Au anyway.

I work with locks and security doors.
I'd ask the landlord first as you are damaging his property as part of installing locks, etc
Most don't complain as you are adding value to their property.
Will they pay for it, separate issue.

PS, when I first read the title: Google didn't work, I thought you may have typed in "proof of god" and got a 404. Hehe

We keep it around 72F in the summer, both because our apartment has no natural shade (which would be the best solution, ecologically-speaking, but it's not our call to make and we won't be here in the decades it would take for a tree to grow that tall). My wife is much more sensitive to heat than I am. I freeze in the winter (I can manage about 67F), she burns up in the summer.

Where I used to live, in central Virginia, it was even worse in the summer than in Kentucky (90F+ temps all summer with gross, stinking humidity so thick you can barely breathe), so that's something, I guess. thesummerqueen knows what I'm talking about, I bet, if not even moreso.

Northern VA was a humid swampy shithole. DC was worse, having been built on an actual drained out swamp. It frequently feels like you're breathing through a hot damp washcloth. If you ever want to put a little perspective into your life about how much you suffer, go out onto the Bull Run Battlefield in the middle of summer. Sit in the tall grass in one of those fields for 10 minutes. Then spend 10 minutes more imagining what it was like to be a soldier on either side in the Civil War wearing your uniform (wool) and gear.

Charlotte at least has a breeze in some parts. And we've been having a fairly mild and wet summer this year. The year I moved down was fucking HOT (triple digits hot) and a drought year besides. Still humid though. I took a shower last night after scrubbing grout and was schvitzing again 20 minutes later.
