Slavery in Jesus' society was a different institution than in America. They were usually prisoners of war or voluntary slaves. Jesus' concern was that they be treated righteously.

So it's okay in your book to make slaves out of POW's?
Sheesh.

Fuck. Would it have been okay if the states just had declared war on whatever places they got the slaves from?

Some people believe we should treat each other equally, and one Human should have as many rights as another. Yet christians often resist this, saying that women should be subservient to men, black people should be the property of white people, and homosexuals shouldn't be able to be with the people they love. Many would say equality is a good thing, but since it isn't good according to the book then we shouldn't do it?

Jesus taught that we're all equal in God's eyes. He never said that woman not equal to men, but that in the family and the church they have different roles. He definitely never stated that black people should be the property of white people. He did say that people should not have sexual relations with people of the same sex, but also that sex for everyone should be within the married state. Either this means he hates everyone or the said there's a proper situation for sexual relations.

The best things Jesus had to say, seem to have been said by people before him. The golden rule comes to mind, which has roots in China. I don't really care if the slavery was different back then. It is wrong to own another human being. Period. It was not all indentured servitude. Plus no one should tell a slave to continue to submit to a cruel master.

You should not drown people for criticizing christianity, despite Jesus commanding people to tie millstones around their necks and throw them into rivers lest they lead a lamb astray.

He wasn't really that great of a guy. He was a tool. He wasn't a savior, because not throwing people into a fire that you started yourself, as punishment for not meeting a standard that's purposefully set impossibly high, does not count as saving them.

And yet christianity has been used as an excuse to hold down women and other ethnic groups, so either it is in there, or Jesus sucked at communicating with his followers. Despite saying he loves us, he apparently also thinks we're worthless without him. Our good dees are as filthy rags, and there is no good in us at all. The message pretty clearly states that he apparently loves us, despite thinking of us as worthless pieces of shit.

I guess we just put them in prison now. At the time that was proper and humane treatment, especially if you treated them well.

RE: No True Scotsman
Absolute bullshit arguement: slavery back then wasn't like slavery was with the blacks. Absolute nonsense. Irrelevant of how they were treated, they were objects, they were owned as property. If someone can understand this and still think that slavery in the bible was 'ok' or 'moral' then they are morally bankrupt and deserve no respect.

Boy, did you get this one wrong. He was saying it would be better for the person doing the leading for that to happen to him than for him to mislead people. He never suggested we do that to anyone.

They were chosen to be the bloodline for the messiah and to be the first to receive him.

You're right in that it's been used as an excuse, but those who do that are not following Christ. It they did follow him they wouldn't do those things. If an atheist is told not hate others and then he does, is it the fault of atheism?
