Unless you know for a fact that your hd was developing errors, it's not uncommon for the incorrectly configured bios to stop you from booting. Also, many boot errors can be fixed by booting off the windows dvd and asking it to fix dodgy partitions.
If it can find the windows folder on the disk, it'll rewrite a new entry in the hard disk's boot sector.

This is by design to help the over clockers regain control if they (me) tweak beyond the stable limits.

Setting the bios back to default is one thing, automatically setting it to boot from a flashdrive though, that retarded.

Are you sure you aren't mistaken about this? I've been building my own PCs for 21 years & have never heard of that feature. Kinda defeats the purpose of a BIOS battery. I own a dual-BIOS system that will use the backup BIOS if the 1st one was failing to POST, sure you aren't thinking of that?

It caused me to run "Start Up Repair" for a grand total of about 11 hours.

It did nothing except waste time.

When I put the new disk in after fixing the boot order it loaded up instantly.

I've got to see if I can find a converter today to turn my old SATA drive into a usb drive. See if I can extract any data that way.

You might be right with the battery, it should last longer.
My dual bios is to protect from corruption and also to have 2 profiles.
The manual states it will default back to bios after 3 failed attempts.
This makes sense as it allows you to select the backup bios.

I ground my teeth building, maintaining and running Unisys servers in the bad old NT days. (NT is not "new testament" for the non geeks, he he)
