Two genealogies of Jesus

Two genealogies of Jesus
Some of the discussions on this forum have brought up the fact that there are two genealogies of Jesus in the Bible and claimed that that proves the Bible is wrong. Actually there is a simple explanation for the two genealogies; Jesus had two parents.

Matthew begins with the genealogy of Joseph. Joseph was a descendant of David through Solomon and the kings who succeeded him. Apparently Joseph would have been king if the line of David had remained in power. Jesus wasn't the biological son of Joseph but he was the legal son because Joseph was married to Mary when Jesus was born. This meant that Jesus was Joseph's heir and through him he inherited the right to be king of the Jews.

Matthew tell the story of Jesus' birth from Matthew's point of view. He tells us that an angel told Joseph to marry Mary but says nothing of the angel's appearance to Mary.

Luke, on the other hand, tells the story entirely from Mary's viewpoint. It seems reasonable to conclude that the genealogy he gives is that of Mary.

Quote:Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
(Luke 3:23 ESV)
Matthew's genealogy tells us that the biological father of Joseph was Jacob. Joseph was considered the son of Heli because he was married to Heli's daughter Mary.

Mary was a descendant of David through Nathan rather than through Solomon. Jesus was biologically related to David through Mary but the inherited David's throne through Joseph.
His invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:20 ESV

So, if not for God's DNA being added to the mix, Jesus would have been his own brother-in-law ??

You're an idiot, Theo.

But I always enjoyed the implications of this line.

Quote:being the son (as was supposed)

Seems like god got in there ahead of "joseph."

Jeebus was a bastard born out of wedlock. Her husband was cuckolded by gawd and should have stoned her to death according to the laws of the time.

Oh, and the genealogy shit is a made up, bullshit explanation. Nobody in that time period kept genealogies on chattel. That's all women were to the men of the day.
