I gotta get you in mah TS server Boru. I need some serious immersion. Ive been neglecting gaelic in favor of chinese recently, but I won't be satisfied until I have them both down like I were a native speaker.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Is there a point to spending money to save a language from becoming extinct?

In my opinion yes, it's cultural patrimony, and culture doesn't really have a price even though we attribute it frequently. If the portuguese language was endangered, I'd be happy people spent money to save it, and I'd do the same for any other language.

"A minha pátria é a língua portuguesa"

Of course this depends, if there is only one or two speakers and the language is virtually useless, it should be recorded for others to learn but it doesn't mean we should preserve it.

Brazil. Don't worry.

Yeah Brazil is a great pillar to spread the portuguese language, despite the different accents and grammatical divergences. It's kinda like the british English V american one, the USA helps spreading the English language. You from Brazil?

You'll never, EVER have Irish down as a native speaker. But have fun trying. Smile

LOL, thats what I've heard. Alas, amusingly, I've "heard" that the reason is in what we hear - as native speakers of this or that language. Nevertheless, I could show you what those words, pronunciations, and accents transformed -into- when they met the appalachians (as far as I know them). Think of it as a trade...lol. Might give you a laugh.

If by extinct, you mean the language stopped being used, or no longer have any native speakers, but had been well documented in a scholarly fashion, and it's oral traditional transcribed, then no, it is not worth saving from extinction, especially not by the elaborate effort of making it an official language.

But if it is threatening to go extinct before being thoroughly documented, then it is well worth the scholarly effort to thoroughly document it linguistically, and record as many of its surviving oral tradition as possible before it becomes extinct.

Basically, languages that are dying are in many cases worth recording and remembering, but not really worth saving or resuscitating.

Absolutely. Only 1.3 million people speak the language of my people and it would be a shame if it disappeared.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

RE: Should we rescue endangered languages?
I've used the endangered language archive on occasion as part of my studies, and I've learnt a language that is endangered (to a level of reasonable proficiency, not quite fluent), a language with a lower estimate of only 6000 widely dispersed native speakers. There are projects out there that aim to archive these languages and record samples in a scholarly fashion.

If you think it's worth saving, then do your part and learn it or donate to one of those projects. There are far more important things to do before this is worried about though in my opinion, so I'll pass.
