So.

Was the exorcist trying to get rid of demons from your home? How did your mom meet an exorcist?

Just like the stupid gap filling that lead to superstitious diet bans on pork in Jews and Muslims, this exorcism crap most likely stems from humans not understanding thins like seizures due to epilepsy or toxins. Claudius was thought to be "possessed" so the idea of bad spirits possessing someone was not unique to monotheism. Some Buddhist sects believe in bad spirits they call "Nats"(sp).

When I was in Japan, visiting my x wife's family their TV was on, and it had a show with a bunch of people undulating and moaning and whaling. In this case it was a combo of acting and power of suggestion. Same mass hysteria crap that causes Pentecostals to think they can handle snakes and speak in tongues.

I don't know if it came from observation or if it's some random bullshit, but that's one thing actually making sense, because of the possibility of trichinella.

It makes much more sense that because they did not have the benefit of knowing the scientific reason you cook pork, that everything good or bad in life was either a reward from a god or a punishment from a god. That idea was in polytheism long before modern monotheism. Humans back then had no modern knowledge of science so they gap filled.

Even the idea of Karma, not the way the west has watered it down, but some sects of Africa and Asia believe that birth defects are a punishment from something you did in a prior life.

Even today because of religious superstition, many of the reasons Ebola spreads is because of the bad handling during their religious burial rituals.

What's really interesting about all this is that most so called 'possessions' have a strong psychological element. It is perhaps not too surprising that if those who are possessed believe in exorcism then, when performed it will have a real-world effect.

Of course what compounds the problem is the fact that there are real-world anchors for this type of delusion (e.g. the Catholic Church).

"The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions" - Leonardo da Vinci

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

RE: Disproving exorcism
I assume more than one religion performs exorcisms. If so, at the very most, only one of them could possibly be the One True Faith, so all the rest of the exorcisms performed would be spurious.

Goddam Christers really need to prune away about 39,000 denominations, at least. Hell, they shouldn't need more than 1. What's up with the rest of them?

Hmmm, masturbate or schism . . .guess we need another schism

Schism, schism, who wants to schism ??

Maybe they needed to use exorcism on all the fucking schismatics ??

RE: Disproving exorcism
when I was a christian, it was suggested that I see a person who could cast out demons. (exorcism I suppose). I said no fucking way. But i did read a book he wrote about it and then I adamantly said NO FUCKING WAY. That is crazy bat shit there. I thought I was the one with a mental problem, looks like I am not alone.
