Schadenfreude
#31
RE: Schadenfreude
We watch horror movies, reality tv (including er, cops, and "murder porn"), and we rubberneck at crashes - are any of these activities immoral?
(for the record, I say no - and all I see in shadenfreude is a coping mechanism - familiarizing ourselves with tragedy, practicing for death - the cathartic release that you might get from tragedy requires that you empathize with the unfortunate individual in the first place, and from that angle...it doesn't sound so horrible as "deriving joy from the misfortune of others" - even though that's exactly what all of the examples above are. I'm just glad it wasn't me - this time, hell..that's reason enough to pour a drink)
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

RE: Schadenfreude
I think it's immoral if someone doesn't deserve the bad thing happen to them.

But it's the most funny thing in the world seeing someone who deserves to have something bad happen to them.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I've felt it, sure. And I think it's sometimes okay to feel it -- when the misfortune falls into the category of "just desserts", I'm cool with a little "shady joy".

... and to get a dose of irony, leaving behind children.

Yep, that's it. No irony required.

I frequently have feelings of schadenfreude but I never have any choice in it, the feelings just happen. If these feelings are sometimes "immoral" but I have no control over having them does that mean I am an "immoral" person?

I sure hope we will not be ultimately judged for our feelings. As you say they just happen.

I don't know...Vosur talks sweet to me in German sometimes and it's very romantic and alluring. Blush

As far as the OP goes...I am definitely guilty of schadenfreude. Meh I think it's only natural to be somewhat amused by small misfortunes of others. It's just like Americas Funniest Home Videos, it's almost all just videos of people doing dumb stuff and getting hurt.

No. You are made immoral by your actions, not thoughts.

RE: Schadenfreude
I generally do not take pleasure in the misfortune of others, rather I tend to feel compassion, pity, empathy, etc.

However, when the misfortune is a direct and foreseeable result of something truly idiotic the person did, I make exceptions.

I don't think this makes me immoral, I think it makes me human.
