They are commanded to spread the word, but Jesus also said to keep religion private. It's harder to save people from hell and keep god from smiting us if they don't stick religion everywhere they can.

John 3:16 doesn't say anything about pushing your religion on others, or keeping it private. Jesus did say in Matthew to keep it private, lest you become like the pharisees that he always spoke against.

Peoples beliefs and ideologies are shoved in our face every day, sports, whatever sport, and religion, just to name a few, which ones are we going to ignore, it boils down to what you taste is........and Confucius said "You cannot argue with taste".
Try to avoid the ones that tell you to kill people who don't conform. common sense should tell you that if you have to resort to violence to get your point across, you probably don't have a good point.
