Bhut Jolokia (Ghost pepper)

Bhut Jolokia (Ghost pepper)
I just ordered some Bhut Jolokia seeds online, with the intention of growing them and incorporating them into my family's food for shits and giggles. Has anyone tried these? how hot are they?
This is roughly how I felt when I completed the order:

I've never touched one but, there's a burger joint in San Antonio that serves ghost pepper burgers. Several of the young engineers I know at SwRI went in there one day for lunch, and 8 of them shared one burger. Three of them didn't make it back from lunch and a fourth was sent home later with a bottle of Rolaids after his department director saw in in the hall. According to the boss man he was gray. Shawn, the kid that got sent home, learned his lesson. He'll never touch them again.

I'd be careful because you can literally make people sick with those things.

ETA: Here's the place that serves the burgers. They call it the Four Horsemen.

Weird because I saw videos of people eating them online and they had a hard time but none of them got sick. They said it was like a 20-30 minute experience. But thanks for the warning anyway.

It depends on the person. Half of the SwRI group was fine. The other half didn't fare as well.

If nothing else, they'll be a fun and challenging plant to grow. (They require a lot of heat, and different element fertilizers at different stages of growth). I also bought some tabasco chillies which should be relatively tame compared to the ghost pepper.

My GF and I eat very spicy food on a regular basis. For example, authentic Thai restaurants in LA, with actual Thai people doing the ordering. So hot, it makes me sweat instantly.

We can handle that. Hot, but doable.

We decided to see what the fuss was about, and bought a bottle of some kind of ghost pepper sauce. It had the usual warnings on it about keeping away from children and pregnant women.

Ha, ha we thought. Those marketing people! Good stuff!

Still, we were unnerved and took it easy. We got toothpicks and put a tiny dab of the stuff on the toothpick and touched the toothpick on the food.

It was so freakin' hot! Any more and the food wouldn't have been edible. Afterwards, we used our go-to habanero sauce, El Yucateco (excellent BTW), and it was mild in comparison. Keep in mind, El Yucateco will melt most people's faces clean off.

Also we noticed - we really like the flavor of the habanero pepper - the ghost, I'm not so sure. It has an almost chemically flavor about it.

We do use the GP sauce in things, but you have to be very, very careful. Mostly, if I want to sit at the table, sweat like a pig and have all the dinner guest poking fun, I'll go with the habanero sauce.

Yes, they really are that hot.

Sejanus, I don't think that's a very good prank.

I've eaten a great many habenero peppers, cooked, raw, with and without seeds. Ate so many one time on a bet that I got very high off endorphins.

I wouldn't touch ghost peppers, ever, not for love or money.

My sister has Barret's, I'm thinking a prank like this might be fatal.
