Why the instinct to survive?

RE: Why the instinct to survive?
We aren't.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_suicide

This place is hostile, that instinct for survival is part of the job description?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Good for you, I am really glad you are able to walk through life and never question why... I would seriously love to not have to constantly ask that question... must be nice.

There are a lot of individuals out there who struggle with this very question. Look outside yourself for a moment?

But I do ask myself that question a lot. And I've also answered it.

Re-read my post.

"Why? There is no reason."

Nature is merely a process, and to ask "Why?" and trying to get some sort of philosophical answer is only going to result in getting a lot of BS.

Evolution is a process. There's no philosophy involved, only a mathematical inevitability.

If you are human being who cultivates a good life for themselves then you would probably never ask the question... but what about those who don't? Or all other animals? I'm just gonna try really hard to survive, even though I don't know why...........

Listen to me, dude. I'm in the shit right now. I haven't got any money to speak off, most of my family has died off, my job is more than insecure, I have debts and I nearly got no friends to turn to. And to top it off, I've got no relationship.

Do I want to live? I don't know. Sometimes I think, it doesn't matter.

So do I contemplate suicide. No. Because I don't know what's behind the next corner. I'm 51 years old right now and sometimes it seems to me, these years have gone by in a flash. So I can wait till my natural date arrives.

So to those educated enough to understand that people who feel suicidal are NOT weak OR pathetic... What is stopping these people from ending their lives??? Why do ANYTHING? Is what I get asked of me....

It's a stupid question if you decide to make it one.

I don't think the people asking me these questions are stupid... I think it's an honest response to really horrible things happening in life... Good grief!!!

I also take offense to this comment.

I'm looking outside of myself when I'm discussing evolution and how there's no inherent philosophical point to life. Instead of freaking out about this, please look outside of yourself.

Why wouldn't we have an urge to survive? Hell just eating is one of the most enjoyable things I get out of life. I wish I could do it all the time without turning into a beach ball. I wish I could live purely off of sweets. Eating is awesome!

I hope if you ever run into severe mental health issues that you get someone to say this to you! Smile

Look outside yourself in the sense that NOT EVERYONE THINKS THAT WAY... I'm talking about individuals who do not have that mind set... thus... step outside of yourself... You only take offense if you choose to lol.

What's stopping them? Most likely evolution.

People who don't have the inherent will to live die out. So it's our genes that give us a healthy fear of dying.

So what's stopping them from ending their lives? The inability to kill themselves, because of their evolution.

If they're flawed enough to end themselves, their genes won't pass on.
