Continue living as a normal person, die, don't come back, and when you die, you enter heaven provided you weren't super evil.

The other choice is that you are given powers and so much knowledge and given ability to live for a very long time (like 30 000 years) and you would be able to solve all the world's problems with your powers and knowledge but the downside to it, is that once you die, you will be tortured for eternity. The torture will be severe as the severest description of hell possible.

Would you live on normally or would you do the sacrifice for the knowledge, powers, and lifespan and solve the world's problems?

Be honest.

If a balrog was climbing up out of a deep chasm in order to kill your friends, would you stand at the bridge with your staff and order your friends to flee, knowing that the chains of the balrog's flail will surely drag you to your doom?

Yeah, it really is about that silly.

But we all know "doom" is just there to both enable us to claim the ultimate self sacrifice, and still to come back as gandolf the white to gloat over the downfall of sauron.

That's okay for a fantasy novel. A real system of morality would never be stoop to that kind of childish disingenuous moral double dealing, would it now.

The last one I came up with was this scenario where I do this sacrifice choice and that's why I can solve the world's problems. I thought about the choice and how hard it would be, and remembered right now about this scenario I day dreamed about.

Are you sure you wouldn't do it? Think about it, you would be tortured but you would be a hero. You aren't being punished and there is no disgrace in it, it's just pain. But the pain would always be in knowledge that you solved the world's problems.

If there really were a Hell and atheists went there just for being atheists, there would be no disgrace in that for the atheists -- just for the evil deity that set up this horribly unfair system.

And, no, I have no interest in being a tortured hero.

From my 34 years rich with experimentation, I can tell you that I couldn't possibly solve all the world's "problems". I wouldn't mind to go to 150 year old telling idiots that their belief in god is as tenuous as a prepubescent masturbation. But hey, Min's on the lead.

Can I just die at the end? Like regular die? Stop existing?

The first. In order to solve all the world's problems I would have to interfere with the individual will and sovereignty of other people. What gives me that right?

I was just thinking...whoever is giving me this offer is obviously a sadist. Considering his offer to make me a hero only if he gets to torment me forever. So...his idea of fixing all the worlds problems is probably a lot different from mine.

Indeed. That's why I enjoy the book as a good read, and avoid reading it as allegory, even though Gandalf and Frodo are clearly Christ-figures.

Tolkien was a polytheist ... who knew?
