Well, with the lock of the RD forums and their planned changes thought it was time to find a new home... interested to see how this site is. Guessing there will be more people coming over as well.

As a member there did they tell you why they want to close the forum outright?

One day we were greeted with this message:

Starting a new discussion will require approval, so we ask that you only submit new discussions that are truly relevant to reason and science. Subsequent responses on the thread will not need approval—however anything off topic or violating the new terms of service will be removed. The approval process will be there to ensure the quality of posts on the site. This is purely an editorial exercise to help new visitors find quality content quickly. We hope this discussion area will reflect the foundation's goals and values.

We know that this is a big decision. We know some of you will be against this change. We ask that you respect our decision and help make this transition as smooth as possible.

We're confident that these changes will improve the site experience and we look forward to seeing what you do with the new system.

I've hidden a bit for readability.

Basically what they were saying is the community that has taken years to build up will be destroyed in 30 days and you just have to take it on the chin. Salvage what you can but the forum is no more.

This pissed a lot of prominent posters, moderators, and forum admins, as that is years of work down the drain, and all new content to be submitted on the new system would need approval first prior to being published. This stifles all free speech and kills of any spontaneity in its tracks.

When the admin, mods and members became a bit too vocal in their discontent, Josh and Andrew just closed the forum all together, and have now re-opened it as read only.

We would be Josh and Andrew then, because all the others I've read and heard over at Ratz are far from happy about it.

Now in their latest effort the blame for the premature close is now shifted upon the moderators that tried to get as many of their fellow community members over to Rationalia by PM'ing them about that site. All former moderators and admins are now demoted.

so that is it in a nutshell.

Well, don't want this thread to escalate as its just a hello thread but leo-rcc states a view which i think many will agree with. Its not exactly a closure, its a transformation, but still not going to be the same.

Basically, i enjoyed the RD forums because of what it was. Looking at the new setup which they plan i may visit there but it won't be a real forum any more and therefore the need to move to a different forum became apparent.

It's how I ended up here as well, but then about a year ago.

Welcome Loki. I'm a refugee from a year ago too. I've found this to be a far more rational place ultimately, although there was some good stuff over on RDF. In my mind, it was too oppressive. Looking forward to your input Wink
