God Is Not Great
Worth picking up?
Persuade me. "Religion is an insult to human dignity. Without it, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes Religion." -Steven Weinberg |

RE: God Is Not Great
Interesting.
"You can't turn away from death simply because you're afraid of what might happen without you. That's not enough! You're not embracing life. You're fleeing death! So you're caught in between. Unable to go forward or backward. Your friends need what you can be when you are no longer afraid. When you know who you are and why you are and what you want. When you are no longer looking for reasons to live but can simply be." -- Lorien, Babylon 5
"Its easy to find something worth dying for. Do you have anything worth living for?" -- Lorien |

RE: God Is Not Great
I like the book, but there is nothing in there that would make me become an atheist if I were a theist. But a good read none the less.

RE: God Is Not Great
It's more of a criticism of organised religion (i.e. anti-theism, anti-religion) than a pro-atheist book. It's very well written though.

Hmm, okay. How's Hitchen's' writing in terms of difficulty? I understand most college-level writing... I'm just making sure I'm not going to be spending 15 bucks on a book that I can't fully understand.

RE: God Is Not Great
His position is very simple.
God is bullshit but "religion" is real and it is very dangerous in the hands of the ignorant twits who swear by it. I doubt you'll have any trouble following his writing. But here is the preview from Google.books so you can see for yourself. http://books.google.com/books?id=8kgjU4w...q=&f=false Quote:It is often argued that religion is valuable because it makes men good, but even if this were true it would not be a proof that religion is true. That would be an extension of pragmatism beyond endurance. Santa Claus makes children good in precisely the same way, and yet no one would argue seriously that the fact proves his existence. The defense of religion is full of such logical imbecilities. - H. L. Mencken |

RE: God Is Not Great
Hitchens is a great author, he puts his point across very well with little bias.
I haven't read it in a while but I remember some points that are slightly biased. It is a great read nonetheless

RE: God Is Not Great
Good book, very funny in places.
Hitchins vitriol at religions is well thought out and eloquent. I need christianity like I need a hole in the wrist

The literacy is about senior high school level at best. Yes,I've read it.It's a polemic, not a philosophical treatise. I didn't notice any new or profound thinking, and don't agree with much of his anti religion position. I find much of Hitchens rather shallow, simplistic and emotional. Dawkins is better, as long as he sticks to his discipline. Do I recommend reading Hitchens? I guess, as long as you don't spend any money. I'd recommend Bertrand Russell 'Why I Am Not a Christian' as a good place to start instead. |
