Why the Bible Doesn't Condemn Slavery

The article does a great job at demonstrating how the author's beliefs (and by extension, yours) have caused him to lose his moral compass.

Nothing more.

A god that would create rules for the owning of another human being as property, being able to beat them, pass them to your offspring, sell your daughter into slavery, being able to trick a Hebrew slave into lifelong servitude, etc... is immoral.

What a great thing that such a god does not actually exist.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Then why is it that you and the rest of the atheist sit on your hands while the greatest slave trading in history goes on right under you noses. There are 10's of thousands of young girls and boys sold into the sexual slavery every year. Christians are actually going to dangerous places in the world to help these girls and boys escape this slavery, yes that's right the church is using an underground railroad of sorts to free these young people while you and the rest sit on your hands and Lalala so you can have your own life and enjoy sitting around here Jesus Stoning. So at least have the decency to say you've failed these precious souls for your own contentment. But, you like the rest here will allow this slavery to continue on, the worst slavery and largest amount of slavery the world has ever seen. Maybe you want be able to sleep knowing you have failed your fellow human beings and get busy doing something about it.

Remember that exchange we had in another thread about how I never want to go back to Tennessee because of people like you? What I bolded is why. You fuckers think you have morality on lockdown, simply because you assert it out of your lily white asses.

I guess I've been doing my hours of volunteering against the (very real) slave trade wrong; I should have thrown a bible at them.

Fuck you and your tu quoque, GC.

It's just not there, beyond the overtly contradicted spin of christians with presuppositions, but their arguments fall flat because of the clear false dichotomy in place. It's even in the article Lek linked to: it's either "get rid of slavery overnight," or "keep slavery." Never does the idea of gradually reducing slavery over time, and replacing it with more reasonable infrastructure, ever occur to them, probably because such a thing, while being the most rational course of action if god thinks of slavery as they describe, does not show up in the bible at all. And it's important to uphold the primacy of the bible, even in the face of obvious, smarter tactics to use, which god would obviously have known about.
I'm not even aware of any reason that cultural norms would have stood in the way. What particular fate would have befallen god's chosen people if they decided not to keep slaves and set everyone free? Would they starve? Their god made it rain food from the sky and caused water to gush from a stone. Would their economy suffer? Their god fished a coin from the mouth of a fish. Would the less liberal among them resist such a command? Their god wiped out 70,000 of them because their king took a census, and killed thousands more on other occasions when they angered him.

What was it that would have happened that was so extreme that even god would have been unable to straighten it out? What was it that was beyond his ability to manage?
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

The bible loves dichotomies. Do exactly what the lord says, or die. Even up to things that may not be laws at the time you do them, like starting to worship other gods before you see any stone tablets that tell you not to do it.

That is a pretty good question and hopefully some of the religious people that visit this site will answer. What would have happened if god just said, "No slaves."

Coincidentally, those same kinds of baseless accusations you spoke of are exactly why I want to move away from Mississippi. I hate this place.

How many talents of silver do the slaves put in the collection plate on the sabbath ?

How many do the slave owners put in ?

Anyone really think God is going to PO the owners, or stir up trouble with the chattel ?

Even if God really did send a decree forbidding slavery, and invoked His typical retribution of dysentery, or lice, or earthquakes or goiters, you've still got the ruling class/elders/seers interpreting God's wrath as being due to the flock not being tough enough on the homos.

Although the name has been created by more intelligent people.

Quote: What does the word Mississippi mean? The name Mississippi comes from the French "Messipi" - the French rendering of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Algonquin) name for the river, "Misi-ziibi," meaning "Great River."
