BIOS problem helpmeplz

RE: BIOS problem helpmeplz
My professional opinion (yeah, I get paid for this) is that the machine is not loading/recognizing the keyboard in time for you to press a key. You need to get into startup/BIOS.

Try holding down the key for BIOS the instant you hit the power button, and hold it down. If you don't know which key it is, try F2 - if that isn't it, power down and try F10, then F11, then F12 (powering down in-between). It's probably F2.

Once in BIOS you need to change the boot order of the drives, putting the CD/DVD drive first.

Good luck.

I've seen F8 and Del trip the BIOS as well.

Install Ubuntu instead. Windows 8 is awful.

Or Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, with none of that awfully craptastic Unity bullshit.

I dunno about Windows 8.1, but 8 is awful, I have it on a media center box - I don't notice it there, because it runs a single application 100% of the time, but if I had to use it on my laptop or desktop, grr... Everything else runs 7 or some flavor of Ubuntu or a derivative.

I don't mind the Unity shell. It is customizable enough that it doesn't upset me.

I do mind the Windows 8 Start Screen. I don't care for touch screen computing, most especially with a Windows device, so I have no need for my OS to attempt to be a cross between my tablet, my phone, and my computer. Especially when it sucks at it.

Or tap it repeatedly and very quickly as that screen is coming up. Some systems will get a keyboard buffer overflow if you just hold it down.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

That is what I had to do.

Dumb question, but, have you considered going into Google and asking "what key to press to access BIOS on a _________________ motherboard?"

Obviously, you have to fill in the blank.

Many times...no matter how obscure the problem seems to me I have gotten an answer by doing that.

When this happens to me, I usually restart and repeatedly mash the usual candidates: all the F keys, especially F2, and the "Delete" key.

You may also be able to download a utility for your machine that allows you to edit the boot order from within Windows.

RE: BIOS problem helpmeplz
I never did find out how to access the BIOS, but I did find that hitting F12 took me to a screen that allowed me to manually select a boot device. So, I managed to get this installed. And, honestly, it's been one hassle after another since I have. So many little problems I've had to fix.

I've used Ubuntu and Mint both, but I too frequently encountered compatibility issues with hardware. I use both in virtual machines pretty often, but I'm too used to Windows to give it up long-term. I've used Windows since 3.1 and 8 can't be worse than ME.

Anyway guys, I do really appreciate the assistance.

I used to have hardware compatibility issues. When I fully committed to Linux, I just started buying hardware based on whether it is compatible or not. I don't do a lot on my computer, though. Internet, word processing, work emails... so it works perfectly well for me.

True.

Use the hold-down method first, then if that doesn't work try the quick-tap repetition.

Although i gotta echo what others are saying - why in the name of all that is unholy would you want to install Win8? It's an abomination.

And an AMC Gremlin can't be any worse than a Yugo, but why would you want to drive either one???

When ME came out, the techies ignored it and used Win2000 instead, until XP was released.

When Vista came out, the techies ignored it and stayed with XP, until 7 came out.

There is a reason that Microsoft has such a crap reputation in the tech industry. 3.1, ME, Vista, and Win8 are the Poster Kids for that reason.
