AVAST! modifies the bootscreen (unless you tell it not to), which is far more dangerous than modifying icons in a .dll file.

In computer science class, I wrote a program that replaced the windows 3.1 boot screen on the school computer with a funny meme of the vice principal, with two days delay, by patching the win.com. True story.

I did something similar with an early school Macintosh Lab using Apple Talk.  It wasn't really a virus though, as at that time viruses weren't even really a thing, and very little trickiness was required.  I mean, in some cases direct access to every computer in the network only requiring the ability to navigate.

Oh yeah, and all home computers at that time AFAIK had a Rom-->Ram OS dump, so you could actually rewrite parts of the operating system.  My friend Nino and I had Coco IIs, and he ended up getting every game wiped that he was currently better than me at.  Ahhh the good ol' days. Smile

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

I find it curious that they don't extend the free upgrade to Vista... we are talking about windows 6 ever since, after all... maybe they're just assuming everyone who used Vista has already upgraded to win7, huh?

You Forgot Microsoft BOB and his little doggie between #4 &5 I think. While it was an interface layer atop of W3, it was such an insult to users that it deserves mentioning.

Windows 9 didn't happen because it sounded too Mich like "nein". True story.

I'll go from 7 to 10 to try.
The easiest way for me is to boot to vhd. I don't like it, I delete 1file.
