Why should people not see this film?

Because it is a lame 1970's British comedy fill with mash banger jokes and their version of slap stick.

While it is not quite up to their best, it is far from lame. I don't find that it holds up quote as well as "The Holy Grail", from a humor standpoint.

Not to mention the humor goes well beyond "mash banger jokes and their version of slap stick" than you imply.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

The big irony is all of that is the core message of the movie simply trades what it defines as one sheeplessly mindless unknowable world view, for another one.

Have you seen it?

It is the finest comedy films ever made.
Intelligent insightful and historically bang on.
It satirises not only schisms and the preponderance of messiahs at that time it also pokes fun at politics.

Excellent performances by all with a tight plot and script that only goes a bit strange when they let the American python play around with aliens.

Oh and I find your insistence on calling every English thing mash banger grating.

Stop it.

You damn red neck.

I actually think it's better than holy grail. It's no meaning of life, but that's not a fair comparison. Life of Brian is more satirical and cohesive, not a set if disjointed skits.

It's intelligent and insightful, and that makes it great. They have things they want to say and they do it well.

They had no ending for Holy Grail which ruined it. LoB has the greatest ending of all time.

I literally watched these last night. Woo woo!
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Removing post because I completely misread the OP.

I would have said for laughs. But if it will piss you off that is an added bonus.

The condemnation approach works when one has the authority to actually ban it and stop it from being shown. But otherwise, it is counterproductive for their interests.

I think we can assume that they think the people who got to see it via the publicity they created were not worth saving anyway, considering they ignored their opinion about it. God will probably punish us all for watching it :p

But I think you are right! Exactly the same thing happened with the interview, a movie I would not have seen if it wasn't for the attention it got. So all in all I am glad some people make a big deal about life of Brian, because besides it being funny it really does carry a good message.

Happens to the best of us.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
