But how useful is logic if there is no emotion to deliver it?

As Wittgenstein said, logic is simply a framework on which we hang facts about our world, it is not a value system - there is nothing to get emotional about.

If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

Logic in and of itself, is emotionless, sure. But when using logic in an argument, particularly the kind of argument one would get into on this forum, it's still fairly silly to say emotion has no place.

I would say that emotion is of course part of human nature, but the emotional protrayed alongside an argument has no bearing on the validity of that argument. It just goes to show how strong your opinion is, and what kind of response the subject matter causes in you.

I sometimes get complaints in real life that I'm not being emotional enough, when in a "debate" of sorts. I find that equally ludicrous. That's a kind of ad hom attack, really.

Actually I think it's fair to say emotion has no place but probably naïve to expect that to be the case.

Meh, I'd prefer this place be entertaining than boring, so I'll have to disagree with you there.

Right? The last time we had a full-on nutcase throwing around insults like rascal and senseless pig it was pretty fun.

Are we really treating every conversation we get into like a formal debate though?

Really? Time and a place and all that, I get it, but really? AF, Facebook, Twitter?

Is there an incredulous emoji?

Why is it that you think ideas about things, especially in a battle of ideas or even wits, are not entertaining enough? Why do they have to be "supplemented" with emotional metacommentary? That sentiment is right up there with "I'd prefer this book to have pictures than to be boring."

Fish and Chips taste fucking amazing plain. But I still like them better with malt vinegar.

You really just don't get it.

It's not that ideas on their own aren't entertaining enough. Just like SteelCurtain said, fish and chips on its own is great. But what's wrong with wanting flavour every now and then? Sometimes I want some vinegar, sometimes I want mayonnaise, sometimes I want ketchup.

Having fish and chips plain every single time would eventually get boring wouldn't it? At least for me it would. I mean, it's fine if you like fish and chips plain. But don't chastise me for liking some sauce every now and then on the side.

Your problem is that you think I need the sauce to have a good time. Far from it, I just think it makes it more interesting with it. Yes I can read books without pictures but this place isn't a library, I don't come here just for that. I come here for entertainment as well as 'ideas'.

Besides, it doesn't really matter. As long as the fish and chips are on the plate, it's still fish and chips. When it's all sauce and no substance, you might have a point, otherwise I just think you're being a boring elitist cunt for the sake of it.

Now I'm hungry.
