Careful parkers, we don't want anyone else to be banned for reporting posts unfairly. By the way, can an admin be banned?

RE: You're being overemotional
Sometimes being emotional does make you wrong.

Take an abortion debate. I will pro abortion debate you all day long. My stance being that all abortion should be legal and only the pregnant woman (even if she is a minor) and her doctor should have any say in the decision. But if you prick one wrong nerve I will have to leave the conversation and come back later, because emotionally speaking I don't like abortion because of my personal history I can get quite emotional if certain buttons are pushed. At that point I'm not longer emotionally stable enough to make a rational argument.

Being emotional when debating is only natural, especially when you're debating something you're passionate about. It's when you allow your emotions to hinder your ability to think rationally that it becomes a problem.

While being emotional can make you irrational, it doesn't disqualify a logical argument. Emotions and logic are not mutually exclusive, IMO, and the former shouldn't be a problem as long as the latter is there.

That's right. I don't think it's wrong to HAVE emotion. I just think it's wrong not to self-edit posts full of cursing and melodrama before you press the "Post" button.

I've often enough sworn to myself at some answer or point that I consider stupid or dishonest. I might even say in a reply that I consider the post stupid or dishonest. But THAT is a LOT (!!!) Different than FUCKING filling a POST with annoying meta-fucking-comment-fucking-tary!!! R_I_G_H_T!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

(Just playing, btw, this is not directed at you) Smile

I don't understand your objection to swearing in posts. That being said, I have found that if you refrain from swearing at people, they will generally also refrain from swearing at you. Even in the most heated debate (not that I've had many but I have had some) people very rarely swear at me.

I also think it's handy to be able to tell the difference between when someone is swearing and when they are swearing at you. Because one isn't a big deal and the other is rude.

I was just saying that sometimes your emotions can render your argument invalid and sometimes it doesn't. It's wise to know the difference and regulate your own posts accordingly.

RE: You're being overemotional
That's a very valuable skill to be able to realize when your own emotions are starting to cloud your thinking. I've found a lot of people are unaware of it, which is why I tend to halt debates when someone is getting really steamed up and I can see them being irrational. And I too remove myself if I feel emotions getting the better of me on a subject, until I can think calmly about it. I sometimes choose to abandon a topic altogether on here, if I find it too much of an emotional subject for me to discuss without getting more upset. Doesn't happen often, but now and again.

RE: You're being overemotional
Again, let's not conflate discussion with debate. I agree, if we are debating even semi-formally that there is a modicum of restraint that is understood.

But the point of the OP was more along the lines of discussion in an online forum. I would argue that color and emotion is vital.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
