The rundown

RE: The rundown
You'll have to excuse Drich, he suffers from a very debilitating case of pathological intellectual dishonesty and an inability to distinguish between 'what is' and 'what should be'.

Otherwise, welcome!

Well, bless your heart, of course that's what you'd claim. You've been programmed for it.

It goes without saying.

Or, it should have ... the OP didn't ask for more examples of closed-minded christian "thinking." He's had enough of that already.

Sorry to hear that Sad The way your mother behaved is disgraceful and a demonstration of how religion rots people from the inside. I think agreeing to just not talk about it is best, unless they are coming to you calmly for an actual discussion and not just mud slinging.

I hope you can worth things out. You're brave to have come all the way out, good for you. The more we have out there, the easiest for the next guy. Most of all, show them atheists can be decent people and shatter their pre conceptions. Don't ever sink to their level.

Thanks man, appreciate it. we have worked much out yes...but not to say their isnt room for approvement. I agree with your notion of not even bringing it up, works wonders lol, sometimes though I get people getting on my case about my disbelief and, being who I am, defended my position. Most times its an actually civil debate, but in the case of first comming out...there was much upsetting discussion if you know what I mean.

I probably would have never came out with it were it not for my mom asking me quite randomly,
"You still believe in god?"

I coulda just lied, but deep down it was like my inner voice was just tired of lying, and in such said no. So now they know, but its ok.

I myself will treat people with respect and courtasy regardless of religious affiliation. Yea sometimes I may say a thing or two to clear up misconceptions, but I do really try to keep it civil.

And Im sorry for the whole Agnostic-Atheist thing in my post. I was in no way trying to degrade atheism or atheists, just wanted to express that...idk...there may be some "creator" out there, but have no reason to believe so. If that makes sence at all.

Wolf, this is Drich. Try not to mind him too much. It might raise your blood pressure.

To me it sounds like you either didn't read the OP at all or you completely misunderstood it.

Wolfclan: Oh sure, don't worry. It's a very common confusion, I have a section all about it on my website if you're interested. It's just a matter of definitions and conventions. Even dictionaries do not agree about it. As long as you sort it out with whoever you are talking to, it doesn't really matter. I've tried to make the parts on my website meet up as far as possible with the uses most common in the atheist community. A lot of people dislike being called atheist, but this is usually because they aren't aware of its actual common meaning.

Yes, there's a big difference between someone wanting to talk to you about atheism, and just attacking you over it. In the second case, there's not much you can do except say you don't want to talk about it. If they continue, they just make themselves look like a douche. Like many things, when people are scared of someone who is different, it manifests in a pre-emptive attack to cover their fears. I've faced it all my life for lots of different reasons. I only bother discussing something with someone actually interested in listening, not just berating me.

Yes Drich, you caught me...

Im just a rebellious crimanal piece of crap looking for an opportunity to rebel and break the law.

Darn...

Guess I might as well forfeit my rights and freedom because I have a diffrent view then society and thus makes me scum.

In all seriousness though, I find your comment biased and unfair. You dont know me or my parents...they could be tottal douchbags for all you know (which they're not).

I never advocated rebelling authority. There are some laws that are necessary like dont kill or steal and so forth.

I take it you do believe in god, which is fine. If that brings you happiness and encourages to do good then I say go for it. That goes with any other philosophy or religion.

Hope you have a good day sir Smile

RE: The rundown
Maybe one day an atheist will instantly cave and find God after a stranger throws wild accusations at them over the internet.

But not this day.

To be fair to Drich, it is technically rebelling against them(parents). But rebelling can be done for wrong and right reasons. Wolfclan, you believe this is right, then fairplay. I think it is important to not let beliefs break down any good relationshios with your family.

I think you need to learn the definition of 'rebelling'...and 'technically'. It would be 'rebelling' if he turned away from religion specifically to go against his parents. If he turned away from religion after investigation and self reflection (which appears to be the case), it's not 'rebelling', it's just a change of belief.
