Indian beliefs produced a pretty shitty society, in that regard the puritans were relative amateurs. I'd feel better about it if neither puritan nor indian beliefs had influenced the US. Choosing between the two is, to me, between ketchup or curry on a shit sandwich.

You think that karma, and rating other creatures based on witchcraft, is logical? Jains believe in a hell...of course. Logic! They don't eat tubers....because they're living beings (but for some reason the leafy greens aren't extended the courtesy). Legit. Hey, guess what, that non-violence thing...it has clauses and provisions.

RE: Jainism
The christians probably think of themselves similarly with regard to pagans. "Better than the other guys" - is a consolation for having nothing better to say. You have strange ideas about logic, btw.

Jainism asks for precisely -the same thing- as any other religion.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I like the idea of karma, if it was true. You do good things, and good things happen to you. You do bad things, and bad things happen to you. When I let someone into my house to crash in my guest room because they were sick, out of a house, and it was winter, I thought i was doing good. But it was actually bad, and they stole some of my stuff. So bad things happened because I did bad. Even though I was trying to do good.

Do good things -because of karma. Bad things happen -to you- because of karma. It's the moral/ethical/practical passengers seat. The carrot and the stick. We rake christians over the coals for the same. All of the same objections apply.
(and lets not forget that the whole point of this karma business is to fly off elsewhere..way to prioritize, eh?)

RE: Jainism
So pretty much this religion is like christianity just minus the extreme violence.

In the christian world view the carrot is getting to worship a narcissist for eternity, and the stick is burning for eternity. Karma is temporary, and is based on actions, instead of whether or not you lick a certain person's boot.

I wuldn't mind reaching Nirvanna because I had managed to accomplished something, instead of going to heaven because I said the right words to the right god before I croaked.

Karma isn't temporary, it's transitory..and again..jains believe in a hell......

(are you wondering, Dyre, whether we might find some extreme violence from the jain corner......?)

RE: Jainism
Maybe they have a different idea of karma than me, then. I have heard that if you have a crappy life now, it could be because you were a jackass in a past life, but if you're good now you'll get a better one next time. I just like that the focus is more on deeds than anything else. It encourages you to do good, instead of just conform to some book that claims absolute authority.

I would be surprised if they didn't.

Sure, the monetized form, mass media karma. Fills bookshelfs all over the west.

Yes, do good for your reward, and fear bad for the punishment. Accepting your lot in life (slave)...because you deserve it. "Good" of course, being avoiding potato stew - have a salad instead - for reasons. If you're very "good", and do what you're told, then maybe you can escape this life entirely. It is true, however, that jains claim no absolute authority...precisely so, they claim that there -is no- absolute authority. That's how they know they can't be wrong about any of this magic, any of this thieve's fortitude...lol.

Jainism: the religion Islam pretends to be.

Still sounds pretty messed up from what you guys say. Religions always seem to have some crazy lumped in with any good stuff. I guess they wouldn't be religions otherwise.
