Here's how the process works -

* if someone is leaving staff, they often give a recommendation that we consider.
* current staff members throw a name or three each in for consideration.
* we debate the nominees and narrow the list to the best-supported
* it goes up for a vote, which continues until there is a majority consensus of voters

Everyone has their own ideas of who would make a good mod.  I'll share some of my criteria.

* very established as a regular - say at least 9 months to a year with regular posting.
* broadly liked and respected within the community
* fair-minded and not afraid to give an opinion
* would fit in with the rest of the staff
