Conversely, perhaps prehistoric (and later) societies that allowed multiple wives per husband 'generated' offspring (via Darwinian processes) where males with no hope of reproductive success, would nevertheless have their genes continued via their one brother that was allowed breeding privileges, and the society did better (ie, more success compared to other societies) with a % admixture of gays not interested in the unavailable females in the first place.
More 'hands' available to build spears, forts, raise food, etc. without the fratricidal losses in competition for the females made for a more successful society.
If I let my brother propagate 'my' genes, while I get to fellate his hot friends who have no reproductive access, then my family 'wins' in Darwin's arena.
