incurable/chronic/terminal illnesses

RE: incurable/chronic/terminal illnesses
I find it really sad. I deeply pity them that their minds have been fucked with so hard that they are living on a blurred edge between reality and fantasy. The human brain is just too damn good at dealing with cognitive dissidence.

Maybe we need to work on a "cure" for that Tongue

I wish I could save them. I wish they could see things from where I'm standing, and to understand how easy it is to fall into mental traps and get suckered by confirmation bias.

For those who actually "see things", like really see stuff we don't see, I worry even more. They are making themselves completely deluded and I can't imagine what is going on in their brain.

To the original post going to pay devil's advocate for a moment.  It is a common belief that our faith is tested through trials.  Let's not forget the book of job.  So our hardships are to prove our dedication to god rather than being fair weather followers.

Now back to reality.  The concept that an omnipotent creator who made us in their image then does cruel things to us so we can prove our love for them is unconditional seems a bit sadistic.  The biggest reason why religion has survived and will continue to do so despite obvious gaps is it's ability to explain the unknown and in a way to play on our ego.  Everything was made for us and this immortal all powerful parent figure is interested in all of us individuality.

The book of Job. Interesting. Remember, God is the same today, yesterday and forever, which means what he did in Job, he is still doing. How do you know he might be making a bet this very minute to let satan destroy your wife's family. Which means you die just like Job's sons died. In fact, most of those who got close to God in the Bible died horribly. Never mind the ludicrousy of the Creator of the universe stooping to make a bet with a fallen angel.

You might claim that, like Job, you are ready to say, "Though he slay me, yet will I serve him." Buy if you're like most Christians, your only reason for serving God is because you think he's the big sugar daddy in the sky who will answer your prayers. Do you think old faithful Job wasn't praying when God sent the devil after him?.

Clinging to faith in God in the midst of trials is a classic example of the Stockholm syndrome.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

The notion that "God" tests faith through trials is particularly abhorrent to me. It paints all other people in a person's life as little more than human props, in a drama centred around that person alone. Never mind that every sentient creature has a mind all their own, with their own dreams, desires and goals. Child born with a life-threatening condition? Family slaughtered in someone else's pointless war? That pensioner you hit with your SUV didn't make it? Never mind, it's just "God" testing your faith.

It's the same kind of blinkered, egocentric view that insists that the Universe ceases to exist when you close your eyes.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Well said.  The cornerstone of faith, especially Christianity, is hubris.  That this all mighty creator of the universe actually has a vested interest in your thoughts and actions.  And it's blindingly obvious that aspect was created to entice people the existing establishment shit on to join the cause.  It's the bait that hooks the fish.  "You're a loser here, but the creator of everything loves and cares for you.  And he'll reward you and punish those you can't personally lash out against.  In the end, you're the one that wins."

It's such a childlike mentality.

One response to the idea which I'd like to see addressed is: what if you're the background character in someone else's drama, whom "God" has made purely to meet some gruesome fate in order to test their faith?

Talk to me. Tell it like  'tis.

The arrogance that makes these people say well God has a plan for my life, as if he didn't have a plan for that baby that died, is just indefensible. Though they make god look like a cosmic ogre and themselves look like idiots trying to defend it.

Don't you just hate it when you spend ages trying to get your point across in a concise manner, then some git comes along and does it in less than a dozen words?

Truth is god of the bible is a horrible monster that tests peoples faith through mental and physical abuse and people call in tests of faith or its gods will that you are dying.
Again god of the bible is a horrible monster. When something good happens people rejoice and say god is smiling upon them and loves them. When a person looses all he has
he says its gods will that i loose this and or its in gods plan. Again god of the bible is a horrible monster. Death of a young child and or newborn again... gods will and again ill say it
god is a horrible monster. And i haven't even touch the other touchy subjects that make people really hot blooded either.
