The gene pool was nearly perfect with Adam and Eve, as time went on the pool became more corrupted, it was then that God told man that brothers and sisters should no longer marry. The gene pool must have been in very good shape for some time, the people live very long lives.

I'm not a literalist, but God did tell Adam and Eve to "be fruitful and multiply", so their only choice was incest. The gene pool would have had to be much better than nowadays. Once it became harmful, it would make sense to outlaw it.
