I don't know. From where I'm standing, the people I spoke about go out of their way to turn the situation into something worse than it is, just to have something to complain about, and will never acknowledge an upside to anything. Maybe it isn't a choice, but personally I would think it is

Actually, no, the fact that they didn't choose the predicament they're in should tell you quite clearly that they can't get out of it "of their own volition" - whatever that means. The depressed have no more of a hard time freeing themselves of their own hardships than the people you describe. Just as you can't help complaining about them and I can't help but write this to you - or I might change my mind, delete this and ignore your last reply to me in this thread, in which case, it still wouldn't be "my own choice" to do so. Will I press "post" or not? I think I will.
