Horsetail Rush? Help greenthumbs!

RE: Horsetail Rush? Help greenthumbs!
I don't know your climate zone......but, you could pot off the hostas and move them, then plant lilac, clematis, sunflower, peony, carnations.......you won't have a problem with broadleafs or reeds in any of that (provided you take care of those new elements). Thx Steel, btw, hadn't even thought about spiking the ph (90% of my time is spent dropping it..lol, didn't even cross my mind)

Whadda ya think, up for something entirely different?

If you're going to scrape the bed, don't worry about the Crossbow. Keep the soil pH high with lime every year in March, then by April you can fertilize. I would create 'islands' for all your potted plants with soil separated however you like from the bed at large.

You just have to be extremely cognizant of the horsetail sprouts. The sprouts contain the spores. You have to cut them super carefully and put them in a garbage bag or something and take that shit somewhere else.

Hahahaha Well, there's a large vegetable garden in the back that I haven't even started yet, but my neighbor tilled it or turne it over. I thought it was tilled but then he said to asked my other neighbor to come in and till it, so I'm not real sure what he did, other than flipped everything over. Point is, I'll be doing all my sunflowers, corn, and tomatoes back there. Hopefully, that doesn't get the rush.

I'm reading that vinegar helps breakdown the waxy protective layer of the rush. Any experience with that?

I have a lot to learn. I didn't even know pH was a thing for soil. Plants won't be harmed by that? Or, that's what you meant by potting what I want to keep?

I do this for my flower bed in the front yard.

I use dolomite lime to keep the pH of the bedsoil high. So it's basic and not hospitable to the wild onion. (otherwise that shit'll be everywhere, it's all over my lawn as it is)

I have Spider grass, hydrangeas, hostas, and rose bushes all in their own 'soil islands' inside the bed. They are isolated from the limed soil. Keeps the garden relatively weed free. Crabgrass is still a bitch. Lot of work, every year, though.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. At least, that will cut the constant weeding down to the soil island areas. I'll just do a quick search for dolomite lime and find out what that's about.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:

"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."

For context, this is the previous verse:

Don't pickle your garden...it won't work.  If you pour enough on, it will make the weeds bigger.

I don't know what you mean by "pickle" but I'm guessing you mean make it more acidic (?), but I thought lime would make it more basic??

I'm reading that I can't just blindly bring my pH levels up, because my hydrogen levels may be low, but my soil content may be fine with clay and magnesium, or whatever combination of minerals that are able to hold on to nutrients.

I'm thinking I'll have to get a pH test as well as a mineral content analysis. I know I have a shit load of clay a foot down, just from using the auger last fall building the pasture fence, so I'll be curious to see what percentage is in my soil. Probably a good thing to know. Damn, I just wanted to kill some weeds, not learn some shit. Tongue

The vinegar is acetic acid and will 'pickle' the garden, although I don't think that's the scientific term.. Big Grin
