The bar is set quite low.

If you are going to compare him with them, then he really is great by comparison.

But yes, you have a very low bar that you are talking about.

I would say he is the best president we have had in over 30 years.  And yes, the bar is unfortunately low.

What do you mean by this? This sounds like a backhanded coded criticism, not a complement. No need to add the comments about a low bar. It comes across as pulling him down to their standards.

"If you are going to compare him to them, then he really is great by comparison"

That right there is what I don't like. He has been great and could be considered one of the top 5 presidents comparing him to any other president in our history.

The first sentence ("If you are going to compare him with them, then he really is great by comparison.") was to say that Obama is not merely better than McCain or Romney (which Minimalist indicated in his post), but that Obama is vastly better than them.  So that, if that is where the bar is set, Obama is great because he is vastly better than where the bar is set and Minimalist should accept that.

The second sentence ("But yes, you have a very low bar that you are talking about.") is agreeing with Minimalist's last sentence ("The bar is set quite low.") when comparing with McCain or Romney.

I presume that the third sentence ("I would say he is the best president we have had in over 30 years.") is clear enough.

None of this is to suggest that I agree with you, as I would not say that he is among the five greatest U.S. Presidents (although I would have to think about it before deciding that he definitely was not among the top five, my immediate thought is not to agree).  I have not bothered to create a ranking of the presidents, and have no definite list that I wish to put forth.

However, I do agree with you in your other post in which you assert that the Republicans are blocking him childishly, and he would accomplish more if they were even halfway reasonable.  But I am less than thrilled with Obama's collection of data on Americans which, in my opinion, violates the Fourth Amendment.  I also do not approve of his attitude toward Edward Snowden.  Of course, it is understandable that Obama would be angry with Snowden, as Snowden exposed some of the crimes of the Obama administration regarding the Fourth Amendment.  You may think it is great to ignore the Fourth Amendment, but I certainly do not.  Of course, the current Republicans are no better on this point, and are much worse on other things, so even so, he is still much better than the competition.
