My dad was the same way. Lifelong republican who once said "the democrats are all for the niggers" and whose last vote was for Obama in 2008. I suspect it had something to do with all the wars.

Bet it hurt like hell to pull that lever. Either the republican base, or the republican field has shifted from where it once stood (or both)...it's difficult to explain votes like your fathers, or my grandfathers, otherwise. I hear it all the time, as anecdote, from my father-in-law and his buddies. They wonder where all the republicans have gone, where all the conservatives have gone. I point to this next elections lineup and they just scowl. I haven't been around as long, myself, nor have I ever been particularly interested in voting....so I don't know, but something seems to be giving people the impression that the words "republican" and "conservative" no longer mean much of anything.
What ticket would Reagan fit on today, I wonder?

Reagan the serial tax raiser? Reagan, who cut and ran in Beirut? Reagan, who granted amnesty to illegal aliens? Reagan, who banned automatic weapons and worked hard to ban assault rifles? Reagan, who traded arms for hostages with Iran?
Only the last would not get him thrown out of the GOP. |
