Many Christians repeat what they've heard from parents and others because they believe that as figures of authority they can't be wrong. I question things my pastor preaches and we'll discuss and study the question. I always go back and study what nonbelievers say about scripture.

Great statement. I generally do not take the words of Christians as truth.

But you hit the nail on the head regarding repeating what they have heard. Amazing how many haven't really read the bible, or only read selected parts... and going back in time, well, i'm pretty sure that a majority of the books were not first hand accounts, especially the OT. These were all probably based on oral traditions (the Jewish religion even has a lot of its beliefs founded in oral traditions) so saying that the bible contains the truth is a bit like expecting a message to come through a game of broken telephone.

As for studying the scripture... you know you can really read whatever you want to read in the bible. There are verses that support almost any position. Need a justification to kill someone? Go and look in the OT... many references to god killing people or commanding they be killed for any number or reasons.

Loki your right many people read into the scriptures what will suit their way of thinking I see it on this forum all the time. Yes christian denominations do the same. I do not agree with you that there are verses that support almost any position. Studying a certain position in scripture takes a lot of searching and you will have to dig into both the OT and NT most of the time before you can find the truth on most positions. I know there are many verses in the OT where Gods judgement brought death to many people and because I'm not God or in anyway His equal why should I judge Him. Loki if you were to believe as I do God being the omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent creator of the universe you would also believe in His sovereignty and justice. Thus I trust in His view being a righteous one. This does not mean that I do not have questions at times about what God has done or what His stand is on certain things,I'm only human after all, so I dig into scripture to discover the truth this can take a long time and sometimes I do not find an answer. Sometimes I go into a study with ideas that I want to see come to light but when the answer comes up different than I thought it would I accept it as truth. Some times I am unsure about how I feel about truths I find in scripture because to the human mind they do not seem right however because of how and what I believe I trust Gods wisdom and righteousness.

I know a lot of flack is going to come my way because of what I've stated but so be it this is the life I've chosen. For me it is just as relevant as the lives you guys have chosen.

@Min sorry fat fingers and you'll just have to put up with my poor writing I do the best I can. If you can't you do not have to read it.

Personally, I don't believe any of it is anything more than a badly written fairytale, but I am well aware that the bible doesn't say the apple represented sex (I have read it thoroughly). The fact that so many Christians (in America) have reinterpreted the story this way is an example of how believers pick and choose until they find the message that they want to find.

It's true that most Christians I know have not actually read the bible cover to cover even once. They have read the specific passages that their priest/pastor/reverend has told them to read and interpret them to mean what their priest/pastor/reverend tell them it means. It's cultish behavior, plain and simple.

Paul I do not know where you live but in the part of America I live in I've never heard the fall of Adam and Eve translated that way but you can bet I will ask people about it. When I read what you said about the apple being translated as sex I must admit I thought of back country people/preachers that were trying to teach on the evils of premarital sex. If this is how the translation of the event came about I would have to say that teaching the scriptures in this way is not the correct thing to do. So many people do this and do not understand the harm they do and some probably don't care and that is unfortunate for the christain church to say the least. Not sure if anyone cares but it's said anyway.

The first place I remember hearing that was from one of my aunts who is a practicing Catholic, but I have heard non-denominational, non-practicing Christians say the same thing over the years on numerous occasions. On the fact that it is not what the scriptures actually say and that teaching it that way is wrong, you and I are definitely in agreement. People calling themselves 'Christian' believe a wide variety of things. It is the nature of individual cherry picking.

Yet Christianity is united on what constitutes being a Christian. Not atheist described Christianity... that's a much wider definition.
