Overpopulation

RE: Overpopulation
I think overpopulation is a big problem. Perhaps even worse, more and more of the population are becoming consumers. I do think having any more than two children is irresponsible. As I've said before, this is my number one gripe with the Catholic church.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Interesting responses... :-)
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

RE: Overpopulation
Good to hear again from you CL.

I'm not sure we will ever have the logistics to keep this many people fed.
The irony is that those who have the most kids are those that can least afford them.
(I suppose that is a natural response, have lots so some can survive)

I can't see a happy ending to this overpopulation issue whichever way I slice and dice it...

RE: Overpopulation
I think that certain areas of the world are over populated now. Unless something changes the entire world is headed the same way. Once the resources are over burdened and become a commodity worth fighting for then war is inevitable. With the inventive ways that humans have come up with for killing each other, I'm sure that the population will be put back in line (maybe taken past the line) with available resources. How about a Logan's Run scenario, you get to live to a certain age and then take one for the world team.

Single child family, not necessarily by choice, just happened that way.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

Pictures tell the story quite well for world population.

Difficult to argue that this sort of growth is healthy. Other species are largely self-regulating by predator growth or lack of resource (or we interfere).

...But for those of you who firmly believe that overpopulation is indeed a problem, how do you view having children?

Correct me if I am wrong,  but if you think overpopulation is a problem, it seems like it would logically follow that you would consider it immoral or at least unfavorable to have kids. Is this the case? Why or why not?

Please explain.

Overpopulation is a problem. Global warming is the result of needing to provide energy for so many folks.

I've got my replacement value, Smile, with one son.

I don't consider reproduction to be subject to morals, because it is an innate biological drive. If we overpopulate so much that we drive ourselves to extinction, that isn't a matter of morality, but rather, evolution. There is such a thing as being too successful in evolutionary terms, and we are courting it: GW, which is clearly driven by man's thirst for energy, is no different than deer reproducing too much and going through an explosion/crash cycle.

Been there.  After contributing my part to the population, I removed myself from the game.  Smile

RE: Overpopulation
For those who answered that they don't believe it's "right" to have kids, does it feel awkward to you when a friend or family member happily announces they are pregnant?

Normally, when someone announces their pregnancy, it's a happy time. You say congratulations, smile at them really big, give a ton of well wishes, go to baby showers, give gifts, etc.

I can't imagine how someone who does think it's right to have kids would react to such news lol. I've never known anyone like that. Do you feel in any way annoyed, a little resentful, or kinda look down on the person a little bit? If so, do you still go along with the "normal" reaction and pretend to be happy about the news?
