Get a tag made as one of those mall vending machines and put it on a break-away collar.

I ran a feeding station on the deck for critters displaced by a large flood in '08. I kept that up afterwards and in '10 a kitten started showing up for food and moved in the crawl space under the house. After a week or so of steady appearances and no sign of skittishness I decided to check her out. I went out at the usual time and put the food down, when walked away about ten feet and sat down cross-legged. She popped up and walked right past the food to climb into my lap and accept pets. I decided she had been dumped there and brought her into the house. Today she rules the whole house despite being less that nine pounds. Mega Tom respects her paw-of-power.
