The Bible made me an Atheist.

RE: The Bible made me an Atheist.
I wonder if even that much goes into it.

I always liked this comment:

Quote:If we had opened our eyes to the light under the shadows
of St. Peter's at Rome, we should have been devout Catholics; born in the
Jewish quarter of Aleppo, we should have contemned Christ as an
imposter; in Constantinople, we should have cried "Allah il Allah, God is
great and Mahomet is his prophet!" Birth, place, and education give us our
faith. Few believe in any religion because they have examined the
evidences of its authenticity, and made up a formal judgment, upon
weighing the testimony. Not one man in ten thousand knows anything
about the proofs of his faith. We believe what we are taught; and those are
most fanatical who know least of the evidences on which their creed is
based.

--Gen. Albert Pike, C.S.A.

Religion is almost a tribal inheritance. Someone born an Apache did not have to read a book about it.

Minimalist thanks for the quote you hit the nail right on the head with that.

Yeah...if General Pike could have followed orders the south might have won the war.

(Probably not, though.)

Um...kind of backwards?

You can't prove the absolute non-existent of anything! Does that mean that the FSM exists, that giant space monkeys exist? Thar spearmint flavoured multicoloured-tailed benevolent and at times malevolent grendels exist?

Isn't it more rational to require evidence for something first? No one can prove the FSM either....never mind you personally! Does that justifiy belief in the FSM, or, anything for that matter? Tooth farries? Unicorns? Hydras? Wyverns? Blah, blah blah, etc, etc.

Ever heard of the burden of proof?

If you have no evidence, it's not rational to believe right? If you have no evidence I wouldn't say it's rational to respond with 'On the one hand, I admit - there's no evidence. But on the other - I can't disprove it!'....riiiighttt...

Inability to disprove is not a good reason for belief, because it's completely backwards.

Well, that is - it's not a good reason for belief if you care about rationality, about evidence!

RE: The Bible made me an Atheist.
Where does pippy get the details about the God he purports to exist?

Would Pippy say God is good? Where does he get that info?
Would Pippy say God is the creator of the universe? Where does he get that info?
Would Pippy say God is personal? Where does he get that info?
Would Pippy say God approves of homosexuality? Where does he get that info?
Would Pippy say God impregnated a human? Where does he get that info?
and on and on....

However you would answer any of these questions will still have me asking "Where do you get that info?"

Quote:Um...kind of backwards?
No, I don't think. Why are you guys atheists? You surely will go on and on about evidence, logic and obvious conclusions. Well I have evidence of the possible existence of god, and it is logical to me. But we have stood at this point many times before. The things that are evidence to me might not make sense to, or convince yourselves. We are individuals like that. I think if you gave as honest an answer as to why your an atheist, it would be that you can personally disprove the theory.

Quote:Ever heard of the burden of proof?
Nope. Hehe, this is also somewhere we end up a lot. I maintain my position on that. The burden of proof is one of your guys favorite tricks. If I claim there may be a god, I should try to back it up. If you claim there is not a god, the same applies. But you guys don't feel the claiming there is no god is a claim, or that disbelief in gods is a belief. I claim that I think there is a god, and that for me to explain why would make no sense to you. We've tried. I talk about the miraculous connectivity and functionality of the cloes system of the earthly ecosystem... The way ot answers the possible beginnings of the universe with something other than infinite cause and effect... But you guys will jump on that like it is open for debate. It is not. The reasons I have for believing in my god are personal. They are logical, and sensible, to me.

Quote:Well, that is - it's not a good reason for belief if you care about rationality, about evidence!
The eternal philosophical conversation about the existence or non-existence of god exists in a realm devoid of the influence of evidence. The argument about god is an argument about ideas, not things.

Quote:Would Pippy say God is good? Where does he get that info?
God is good, yes. We named the good god, so as to personify it. I get the info about gods goodness from my own personal conclusions and decisions about the nature of god.
Would Dotard say god is not? Where does he get that info?
Quote:Would Pippy say God is the creator of the universe? Where does he get that info?
I have always been turned off by the beginning of the universe argument. It seems so unknowable, and kind of unimportant. It is possible that god created the universe, to me that makes more sense than randomness, and a string of miraculous (and infinite) coincidences. But I don't know, and have no way of knowing. I get that info also from my own conclusions after years of being on this ride. Would Dotard say the universe created itself? Where do you get that info?
Quote:Would Pippy say God is personal? Where does he get that info?
Man I repeat myself a lot. God can both be personal, and objective. I believe in both faces, since it loopholes me out of the possibility of being wrong. It is easier and more common for the god argument to be personal, rather than objective.
Quote:Would Pippy say God approves of homosexuality? Where does he get that info?
I don't know. My interpretation of god is that she doesn't care about little things like that. I really don't know though, and I care about that question even less than the beginning of the universe. I get that info from my own take on this world.
Quote:Would Pippy say God impregnated a human? Where does he get that info?
No. I would not.
Quote:Where does pippy get the details about the God he purports to exist?
From my life, from my pondering. Where do you get your spiritual beliefs? Dawkins books? I expect everyone to be responsible for making up their own minds. Where do you get the details about the non-existence of god?

As an atheist, where do you get that info?
For me, no book, no teacher. Just taking it all in as best I can, and making conclusions about what I see. We are all only human, with a capacity for curiosity and doubt, for disagreeing with others about fundamental truths.
Thanks, I love questions.

RE: The Bible made me an Atheist.
Pip, if you don't mind me asking, "Which" god do you believe in......I see you have listed that you are a Polytheist, which defines multiples. So do you pray to a Sun god, Moon god, Water god etc. etc. ???

Are do you pray at all for any god(s)....??

Dotard made a good point on the other page. Pretty much; if you didn't fall into the path of a Bible beating Christian, then where do you draw the line of what is factual and what is not on the "God(s)" from which you believe in?

Or, do you simply have your own understandings and are just comfortable with them regardless of evidence or lack there of?

RE: The Bible made me an Atheist.
I do not deny the possible existence of beings with power nearly beyond our imagination... but the all powerful cannot exist. An example of why: can an all powerful being create a rock so heavy that it could not lift? In this conundrum, one may decide that the being can create the rock, and be unable to lift it (therefore not all powerful); or one may decide that the being cannot create the rock (therefore is not all powerful), because it cannot make a rock so heavy that it cannot lift it.

Another thing that a being cannot be, is all loving. To love everything... nothing could handle that... the amount of continuous pain the being would endure makes me shed a tear just thinking about how horrible that would be... Love is an emotion, and to love everything: one would have to have great emotion... never-ceasing depression would be inevitable... and would without exception lead a being who has emotion to suicide. Without emotion... there is no love... so a being cannot be all-loving but for the most breif amount of time before being overwhelmed.

Not to mention the impossibility of 'unconditional love' (which is really the same thing as being all-loving, but Christians sometimes don't understand if you don't regard them as seperate matters) that accompanies how horrible being all-loving can be... just like anger, happiness, and sadness... love is an emotion. All emotions are based completely on condition... for example: i am arguing vehemently with my father, and my boyfriend calls... i can go from SCREAMING IN ALL CAPS KINDA FURIOUS RAGE ---in not even a second--- to cheerful 'i love you's'. A true unconditional love would love every atom, subatomic partical, rock, animal, plant, etc. 100% equally. NO CONDITION TO THE LOVE... it is not possible without commiting suicide from the pain you would endure...

This is long enough for a person to say 'TL : DR' without fear of prosecution... so i'm stopping there for now, although i could continue with the following: A being cannot be all-knowing, a being cannot be all-pretty-much-anything-if-you-give-it-a-minutes-thought, and pretty much anything else that exists only in fairy tales (and in very sad ones usually...).

If a god is not all-anything... then i think it possible that it exists. Probable? No... but possible.

RE: The Bible made me an Atheist.
Ok I get it now.

Pippy has a God of his own making. It has all the attributes Pippy finds appealing for a God to have. A customizable God.

Can I have one too? Mines gonna have a flame job on his robes and he ain't gonna look like a guitarist from ZZ Top. OH WAIT!! Even better, mines gonna be a chick, a naked chick with an oral fixation who regards my tally-whacker as her finest creation ever! Yeah, that's the ticket!

Fine example of man creating God we have here. Damn, why didn't I think of this before?

I wonder if there is an advanced course in customizable theology at the local university.

Dotard,

You CAN! (No advanced course necessary)

http://www.redefinegod.com/

http://www.yoism.org/

Act now and for the low low price of negating logic you can just make up whatever the fuck you want and nobody can argue with you because if they do they will be seen as "intolerant" which is BAD because in this day and age no judgments are acceptable.

I've heard it said that if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything.
