I feel like this warrants a separate thread?

Sorry, you will get used to the threads going off the road, through the barrier fence, down the cliff face and bursting in to flames.

Oh boy... Engage butthole blockers!
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Alright, I started another post entitled "what human purpose does religion fill" and low and behold Vorlon13 appeared; butt plugs were not mentioned to my dismay.

I've grown tired of the intrusion of faith into government and I am seeking to explore other beliefs. If, in time, I can help Ahmed then even better. I'll show proper respect in doing all of the above.

How do you all know, this Ahmed is legit? Does anyone know him person to person? Does any reputable NGO or other organisation vouch for him?

You know the old saying about a fool and his money.

I would never, never donate a single dime to something like that. Not because I don't care about the needy or people in peril, but because chances are, this money will be lining the pockets of some lowlife, who just saw the chance to jump the train of the fugitive crisis. If you really do care about what's happening in the Middle East right now and the hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the region, there are reputable NGOs accepting donations.

RE: A question concerning forum protocol
@abaris : I don't know for certain, I just have my personal experiences with him and the experiences of those I've known for a very long time that have known him in Atheist circles on Facebook over the years. I've taken the time to read a few years worth of posts he has made and it is consistent; the idea to flee Libya was an idea brought up by friends and the GoFundMe page was not his idea as well. If it were a scam it's been years in the making and the ultimate payout would likely only be the price of a ticket out of Libya.

In a nutshell he is grappling with what appears to be a mother who is both devout and mentally ill(no joke needed, she blames him when it rains and calls him a demon); she has made threats to contact extremists to punish him for his Atheism, the state is in chaos with daily gunfire and nearby explosions, and all the while this kid/young man is happy if his internet connection and box fan are working that day despite all of that. It's surreal.

The English with subtle mistakes in spelling and grammar seem legit in my very humble opinion. The photos of what he sees out his window are legit. His links to politics and media are varied and from intelligent sources. His discussions of what local parties in Libya are doing is detailed and insightful. His humor and Atheist views are consistent. As someone claiming to be seeking a new home his interests are global and he samples many, many cultures in his posts. For a young man of his age he is definitely special.

That being said I've asked Ahmed to write some short pieces describing his story. Things like what it was like as a child under Muammar Gaddafi, what was it like secretly holding atheist views at various times, and how the threat of the Islamic State has changed his daily life.

I think all of that has great value on many levels and I'm not going to post the GoFundMe link without a reasonable representation of his story in his words and not until I've met the 30/30 rule criteria.

We'll see what time brings.
