Yes, I'm afraid every time I drive.  A little.  And if you AREN'T, then I don't want to be on the road with you.  It's alert type fear.  I'm aware I'm driving a multi-ton killing machine, so I am extra careful with it.  At the same time, every time I leave the house, part of me knows I might not come back.  I don't think enough people are afraid of their cars and trucks, TBH.  Respectful fear, not hide under a blanket fear.

Perhaps this is just a reality check.  You see, when I was 17, I almost DIED in a car crash. Seriously. Wanne see the head injury scar?  I can post pics.  
But anyway, I'm more aware than most people, I guess, that the vehicle I'm driving and those around me could kill me at any moment.  Even though it was along time ago, it's a lesson I took to heart.

And yes, I feel the same about guns. I'm not terrified of them. As I've stated, I was raised with them, and feel I made a competent gun owner when I was one.  BUT I made the informed decision to rid myself of that unneccesary risk.  I still need my freaking car to get around, because the nearest store is 5 miles away, but I ride my bike with my kid when we aren't picking up things we need to cary, like groceries.  Trust me, if I could, I would ban large vehicles except in cases of special need, and reduce speed limits, and encourage people to ride bikes, scooters, etc, as much as possible.

There is risk in everything.  The point is risk vs reward.  I don't get enough out of a gun to warrent the risk (and few people do, they just THINK they do).  I DO get enough out of my car to warrent the risk, even though I hate taking that risk.

Banning large vehicles? Does delivering food to supermarkets count as a special need? How about gas to gas stations? Parts to factories? Lumber for housing?

Without the economies of scale, such a measure would drive up the price of most goods and many services. Sorry, that's even more unrealistic than banning handguns.

My dad's sense of humor came at the expense of others; he was more dickhead than funny.

So you just said the same thing I said about cars using different words. As for what other gun owners get out of them, you have no right to assign that so long as they take every reasonable precaution. Of course nobody is arguing ban guns, so if we can enact laws that allow sane, responsible, and stable people to own guns then that's how it should be done. The problem is getting that legislation with the gun lobby in place and all the guns in circulation.
