Boy how times have changed.

Boy how times have changed.
Today I woke up, and every damned news channel became the Pope channel. So I put it on Turner Classic Movies, just to get away from all the masturbation and commercialism of today's media. Anywho, missed the beginning of the movie. It was about a rich business owner matriarch played by Betty Davis interfering with her daughter's marriage and husband, and the affects it had on their daughter.
So supporting actor kept popping in and out and the voice was distinct but I couldn't quite place the face. Towards the end of the movie, it hit me, it was Bones from Star Trek.

But it had some elements today that would be unacceptable. In one scene the husband wants sex from  his  wife and forces himself on her, and of course, in Hollywood, back then, the meme was that women love forceful men. But today, that would be considered rape.

Now I am old enough to remember when students in HS were 18 had a smoking area outside the cafeteria.
But this movie had a scene where a shrink was bribing the granddaughter to answer questions by offering her cigarettes. The age of the character was 15.

Underdog took either steroids or meth when he was close to being beaten.

Worked every time for him.

Not completely.  A number of Republicans have stated recently that "you can't rape your wife".  One of those was Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen.  (Even though spousal rape was officially made a crime in 1997 - you would think a lawyer would know this!)  And Utah's State Rep. Brian Greene.  And then there are all the fundie Promise-Keeper and Quiverfull type of organizations . . . they are about as nauseating as humans can get.   There's still work to be done!

I remember the times when a woman wasn't allowed to take a job if her husband didn't agree. And she couldn't even open a bank account without her lord and master saying it's OK. That only ended in 1977. At least in the largest part of Europe. Abortion is only legal since 1975. There actually was a very popular crime series on German tv that was called "Der Kommissar" (The commissioner), which tended to pick up on contemporary social issues of the 70ies. It featured an episode about illegal abortion.

On a side note, all the mains on this series were smoking and boozing as if there was no tomorrow. So much so that several columnists wrote pieces about the lead actors (Erik Ode) smoking habits. This being the 70ies, they were rather advertising fags than condemning the habit.
