I so wanna try mead. I've never ever had mead. It sounds amazing.

What other alcohol is it most similar to? Is it even remotely like anything else? Or is mead really completely unique? If there are similar alcoholic beverages what is the closest to it in similarity?

I'd love to know if I'd tried anything at all similar since I haven't tried mead.

That's good to know! I have always wanted to do distillation. There's a home brew shop just round the corner from me that sells sets for distilling although I always thought that it was illegal in the UK. I would like to set it up in our house in Germany though so I might end up buying something here and taking it all back with me next time I move back.

I'd start with apple brandy, if I was just starting.  The product of final fermentation is roughly in-line with what you need for brandy - and it only takes a month or so.  With mead, the final gravity has to be finessed over the course of 3 to 6 months (minimum).

You have to understand that what you're asking here is a bit like "what's soda taste like?" If it's not flavored with adjuncts and it's allowed to ferment out completely, it's a bit like dry white wine. If left sweet, it can be a bit like a sweet Riesling or Moscato. However, it can be flavored with damn near anything.

Wait, what? You have a naturally cool, dry cellar and you're not lagering?

Good point CD thanks for you explanation it was very clear too Smile

So what are one of your favorite mead flavours?

According to ratebeer this is the highest rated mead: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/schramms-th...ss/231441/

But I cannot decipher whether it's one flavour involving a mixture of cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant... or whether those are the 3 different variations of this brand.

Although of course we're talking about homebrew here Smile

So what is your favourite flavoured mead CD? Do you have a favourite?

Our entire house in Germany is naturally cool but it would be rather pointless trying to brew lager there considering how easy and cheap it is to buy crates of the professional stuff there. To be honest I got rather bored of German beers and was always looking for something different. Black beer was interesting though. German liqueurs are always disgusting though.

I would love to brew in Germany but we don't often get a chance to live there. Not even for one season to start growing stuff.

It's brew-weekend here. My husband is going to make a partial mash brown ale. I'm probably going to do a gallon of elderflower cider.

I live in the micro-brew capital of the country.  There's just no point in me brewing beer.  I'm surrounded by the most amazing award-winning brewers on the planet.
