Misconceptions About Islam

Hi Mo3. I started up the thread you mentioned so that I could start typing the things I want to ask you about the misconceptions in regards to a woman's role in islamic society and religion. Of course, as you know, there are many stereotypes people think of regarding this issue. Here are some of the stereotypes that I have been told.

1. Women are expected to be subservient to their husbands.

2. Women are expected to be modest with their bodies because the men can't control their own body's sex drive.

3. Women can not have sexual freedom, and they must not have sex with anyone other than her husband.

4. There are many social restrictions on women regarding their financial autonomy, their unescorted/unapproved travel, etc.

5. The koran recommends that a man beat his wife.

That's what is on my mind for starters. I look forward to reading your response.

Read Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, it's a fascinating autobiography by a woman who grew up in Islamic countries, suffered female genital mutilation, was forced to marry someone she didn't love, escaped to Holland and became an atheist.

Furthermore, she worked on the short film Submission with Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered because of this film. It depicts the treatment women receive in Islam.

As far as I am concerned, these are not myths. Ayaan Hirsi Ali speaks out about what is done to women and she has to be under constant guard because of the death threats.

It's about like typing with your eyes closed... something I do on occasion (especially when I'm getting tired). It just takes a little practice to do it well... being an avid video gamer might help

ok i was just waiting for the first thread to slow down a little but i will try to make the thread tommorow(sorry that i will open another thread as it will b for answering a lot of misconceptions not about women only)but i will start by women position in Islam as i see that girls here r interested to know about this

Just add it to this thread... no need to make 2 threads. If it isn't too different it'll probably just be merged anyway

I'd say most of us here already know about women in Islam... it would take some seriously good counter-evidence to challenge my understanding of this 'issue'.
