I know how you feel. But I agree with Redbeard, things are improving. All we can do in our short time here is try to make a positive impact. One small thing can have a ripple effect, and many good deeds over time can be transformative.

I think the planet's remaining life would be better off without us, but I've just had to accept that we're here. I may as well do my best to try and steer humanity in the right direction, in whatever capacity I can.

We're just sophisticated apes, when it comes down to it. The expectations for ourselves shouldn't be too high.

Please tell us more if you would like, so we can help you think through it. In my most depressed moments, it's the overwhelming cruelty our species is capable of that stings the most. But when I'm more balanced, I can acknowledge that such horror goes on, but accept there's only so much I can do. If I let that drag me down, I won't be able to make any positive impact when I have the opportunity.

You aren't a species, you are an individual.  You are limited somewhat by your brain, hormones, etc. but you don't have to be like everyone else to be alive. Nor, in fact, are you alone in your feelings about humanity.

I don't see a species that's doing better, I see the same creatures that watched their neighbors burning at the stake as a regular form of entertainment. The same creature, just cleaner for the time being.

You take the bad of individuals or groups of individuals, and generalize it to the whole.  This is a fallacy-- the human species didn't watch their neighbors burning at the stake-- that was a collection of individual people.

People are capable of great good or great harm. . . and this is so because we are the ones who define those terms.  If there was nothing but burning and war, then it would be neither good nor evil-- it would be what we are.  We'd have no concept of good if we weren't capable of it, and of experiencing and appreciating it.

Your problem is that you are choosing to view humanity, the world and yourself through grey glasses, and then claiming that everying is grey.  For people in this state, it's hard for them to see that they are doing it by choice. But it is a choice-- you are as free to change your perspective as you are to press that "delete" key and type a different message.

RE: Suicide
When it comes down to it the argument is justified like so it is your own life you can do what ever the hell you want with it.
But the things are you will leave family and friends behind and people more or less paint suicide selfish. So is it moral
or immoral it falls in that grey area of subjective morality. You have religion painting suicide as a bad immoral thing
it is hypocritical of religion to talk about suicide as well religion it was and still is cause of a lot issues we face.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.

You can't carry the weight of the world. You aren't responsible for what others do.

That might be what you see. Sometimes it's what I see, too. The numbers don't support it, though. I mean, really...think about it. Public executions and blood sports are illegal pretty much everywhere, so if we're still entertaining ourselves by burning people alive, at least we're doing it quietly. It's a step.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

RE: Suicide
I'm not sure about moral, define moral.

When my time comes, when life has lost all flavor, when all I have left is a lingering death, causing suffering-pain-burdens on those around me that I care about, I'll check out.

Until that time I don't see suicide as an option.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

I decided that I am going to suicide the slowest way possible. That is the S&M side of me.

The slowest way possible to kill oneself is to live as long as possible with the knowledge of mortality.  For those of us with the heart to do so, +50 punk rock points shall be dealt.
