Again, the ancients were not stupid. They wouldn't have done it if there wasn't a reason for it.

An interesting note, even though it disagrees with the classic iconography of a crucified jesus, Catholics love to point out that Jesus was actually crucified through the wrists because that's what the shroud of Turin shows. As though that's proof of anything.

I think the better description is the ancients were in general stupid, the problem is they were not reliably stupid.

"The ancients" -didn't- believe in jesus. The world went batshit, for some reason. When the first jesus freaks were just cropping up the greeks were already pretty thoroughly versed in euhemerism, just as one example.

Some did. On a percentage basis not very many. When you start breaking them up by the various sects ( which were later deemed to be heretical by the proto-orthodox who re-wrote history to suit their needs) the odds are that no one group was very large at all.

In order to study the matter you must first totally dismiss the bullshit story which they put forward and there are a lot of people who'd rather castrate themselves than admit that it is all a tissue of lies.

I actually thought that most cruxifictions were done with straps and not nails. I thought nails were only punishment for certain crimes
