Women's clothes?
RE: Women's clothes?
I agree modesty is a good virtue, but it's a personal choice. Also, the forms of modesty are subjective depending on culture, etc. Just because someone is dressed in a way that we personally don't think is modest enough doesn't make it ok to objectify that person in any way.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Oh horseshit

Modesty becomes a bad thing when it represses people and makes them uptight and inhibited.

Modesty becomes a bad thing when it is used to make women feel responsible if men are tempted to rape them.

Modesty becomes a bad thing when it is confused with shame.

Modesty becomes a bad thing when people take it upon themselves to judge whether another person is being modest enough, or not.

There are times when modesty is not prudent.

^ I agree with this.

I'd say though that the true virtue of modesty is much more about humility and pureness of heart than it is about clothes. Making someone else feel ashamed of their clothes just because you don't approve of them is not modesty.

I will agree in a heartbeat that humility is an excellent virtue.

But that's not to say that "Pride" is a bad thing, right across the board, either.

There is legitimate pride, and toxic pride

None of those apply if everyone was modest.

Disagreed.  Just because an entire population is subjugated to shame and control,
does NOT mean that "modesty" will not be perverted into the things I mentioned, above.

Look to the middle east, if you doubt me.

Modesty is synonymous with humility.

It is good in itself, always.

If all exuded it, it would be beneficial to all on an unseen scale.

What would be good for all, is if motherfuckers such as yourself refrained from sympathizing with rapists.

RE: Women's clothes?
You know when modesty is good?

When you know enough not to draw attention to yourself,
and thus steal someone else's thunder,
or be disrespectful of the circumstances,
like at a funeral....or a wedding.

Or when a guy that I'm not really into
is obviously chatting me up;
I don't want to hurt him,
but I also don't want to encourage him
to believe he has a chance,
where he does not.

THAT is a time to put my assets under a shade,
so as not to carelessly encourage him.

And by assets, I don't just mean cleavage;
I also mean being slow to laugh at his jokes too much;
not being too effusive, or as personable as I could be.

Going to a job interview,
or to meet your boyfriend's parents for the first time;
or meeting your best friend's husband,
or babysitting children....

In those circumstances, I will make a point of exercising some modesty,

NOT because I have anything to be ashamed-of,
but because the primary objective of the occasion is not one I wish my charms to detract-from.

I keep trying to practice modesty but I keep failing.
