It strikes me that even cheering for the home team when a basket or a goal scored, it makes the visitors feel badly about themselves and inadequate as defensive players.

You know, we shout shit like that because it's more fun...and alot easier than;
"Do your best, do your best, and if it turns out that your best isn't good enough that's okay because we're all unique and I'm sure you'll be rewarded for the effort and discipline it took to get not-quite-as-good as the other guys but better than most of us!"
...on second thought, it might actually be more fun to go to a game and start shouting the above like a loon.
